Work under way on luge track near Muskegon

NORTH MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) -- Land grading and other preliminary construction work is under way at Muskegon State Park, where a 350-foot-long wheeled luge track is being built.

The fiberglass run for the feet-forward sleds that roll rather than slide on ice will be one of the first of its kind in the United States.

It's part of a large package of improvements planned for the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex at the park.

The Muskegon Chronicle says the track is expected to open by Memorial Day.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Muskegon Sports Council, which operates the complex, are working with a German water slide company that is designing and building the track.

The fiberglass sections are to arrive from Europe in March and be assembled in the spring.
