Michigan Citizens: Economy is worsening

79 percent are expecting state to weaken further

DETROIT (AP) -- A poll of likely Michigan voters has found great concern about the nation's economy, with 79 percent saying they expect it to weaken further.

Forty-eight percent say the economy is the nation's top problem, while 14 percent cite gasoline prices.

EPIC-MRA polled 600 people July 13-15 for The Detroit News and TV stations WXYZ, WILX, WOOD and WJRT. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points.

Fifty-nine percent of those questioned say they're driving less, 11 percent say they're changing vacation plans, 10 percent say they're cutting nonessential spending and 3 percent say they're carpooling or using public transit.
