Fishermen found safe on Lake Erie

MONROE -- The U.S. Coast Guard says four fishermen whose boat had capsized in western Lake Erie have been found safe.

Petty Officer Brandon Blackwell says Monroe County marine deputies spotted the men about 5:45 p.m. Friday offshore from Middle Island, about 35 miles southeast of Detroit. Blackwell says they were holding on to their capsized 19-foot boat, which had left Sterling State Park in Monroe at 8 a.m. Thursday.

The men, who are between 52 and 76 years old, were receiving medical attention Friday evening.

The men had been expected back at the boat launch about 4 p.m. A family member notified the Coast Guard when the men hadn't returned by 10 p.m.

Saginaw Valley OKs 6.3% tuition hike

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University has approved a tuition increase for the 2009-10 academic year.

The school's governing board on Thursday approved the 6.3 percent increase. An undergraduate student from Michigan taking 30 credits will pay $6,900 in tuition and fees, up $408 from this past school year.

The tuition increase helps alleviate an estimated 3.2 percent decrease in state funding expected by the school.

GPS leads man

to marijuana arrest

PORT HURON -- Authorities say a Michigan man was arrested on a marijuana possession charge at the Blue Water Bridge after his GPS mistakenly led him onto the span connecting the U.S. and Canada.

Port Huron police Lt. Paul Reid tells the Times Herald that the 30-year-old man turned onto the bridge by mistake Friday morning because he was following the instructions of his GPS unit.

The man from Macomb County's Harrison Township had to go through a U.S. Customs screening and was arrested on a charge of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana. He was later released, but his name wasn't disclosed.

The Blue Water Bridge about 55 miles northeast of Detroit connects Port Huron and Ontario over the St. Clair River.

Arrest in 1993 rape, slaying

ALLEGAN -- Authorities in southwestern Michigan say they've arrested a suspect in the rape and slaying of a woman whose partially nude body was found in April 1993 in the Kalamazoo River.

The Allegan County sheriff's department says 45-year-old Van Buren Hutchison was arrested Friday in Indiana.

The Grand Rapids Press reports authorities recently reopened the investigation into Jeanette Reeves' death and asked for help finding Hutchison. WOOD-TV reports tips from the public led to his arrest.

The woman's body was found in the river in a remote section of the Allegan State Game Area. Her wrists were bound. She was in her late 20s when reported missing from the Chicago area in 1992.

Boy, 10, steals car, drives into house

GLADSTONE -- Gladstone police say a 10-year-old boy stole a car and crashed it into a house, a stop sign and a tree.

Police in the Upper Peninsula community say the boy drove the vehicle around the block and then into the home. After the crash Thursday evening, they say the boy then backed the car into a stop sign and eventually a tree.

The Daily Press of Escanaba and WLUC-TV say he was taken into custody and later released to his parents.
