Temps warm, but 2 are killed in crashes

TWIN LAKE (AP) -- Warmer weather has arrived in Michigan after a week of Arctic cold and a storm that brought up to 15 inches of snow and was blamed in two fatal crashes.

Frankfort was the state's hot spot at 2 p.m. Sunday with a reading of 27 degrees. Iron Mountain climbed from an overnight low of minus 9 to 22 above by 2 p.m.

Light snow was falling in much of the state Sunday afternoon, the tail end of a storm that brought 15 inches of snow to Twin Lake near Muskegon and 14.7 inches in Hart in Oceana County.

In the Lower Peninsula, Auburn near Bay City and Fairgrove in Tuscola County got 8 inches of snow, the National Weather Service said.

Rockland in the Upper Peninsula's Ontonagon County got 13.8 inches of snow, the weather service said.

State police closed Interstate 75 in southern Genesee County for about an hour Sunday morning because of multiple crashes, WWJ-AM said.

"The roads are still very slippery," said AAA Michigan spokeswoman Nancy Cain. She said the auto club got about 4,500 calls for road service help Saturday, compared with a normal level of about 3,000. "Calls have been well above average since mid-December."

Mikita Jones, 20, of Holland was killed in a two-vehicle crash on snowy Michigan 40 about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, the Allegan County sheriff's department said. It said another passenger was critically hurt.

Earlier Saturday, Ryan Clark, 18, of Sterling Heights was killed when he lost control of his vehicle on snowy U.S. 131 in Kent County's Algoma Township and crashed, The Grand Rapids Press said.
