Elks top Muskegon WMC

MUSKEGON — Elk Rapids made a halftime change and Muskegon Western Michigan Christian couldn't adjust.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Elks shifted offensive formations, going from a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1 with frequent substitutions up top.

The result was four second-half goals and a 4-2 victory over Division 4 No. 7-ranked WMC, the first time No. 10 Elk Rapids has beaten the Muskegon team in Nate Plum's tenure.

The Elks' changes gave them one extra midfielder, and the extra passing ability paid off quickly.

Rotating the forwards up top so no player spent more than 10 minutes there, the Elks received goals from three different strikers. Eight minutes in, Jesse Starr struck first, off the first of three Austin McMullen assists in the half.

Andy Atkinson scored off another McMullen set up, Spencer LaPointe tallied what would end up as the game-winning goal on a Kirk May assist and Atkinson sealed the outcome off another McMullen helper.

"Our back line gave up two goals, but they played very well," Plum said. "Cam Johnson had an incredible day."

Tim Barber made nine saves in goal.

TC West      1 Midland Dow      0

Christien Geiger scored the game's only goal with 10 minutes left in the first half to give Traverse City West a 1-0 victory over Midland Dow.

Dan Montgomery set up Geiger's goal, and Justin Kraft didn't let in a goal to preserve the shutout win for the Titans (12-3-2, 8-0-1 Big North Conference).

The Titans (9-2) won the JV game 2-0 on a pair of goals by Nico Ragel-Wilson.

TC Central      3 Midland Dow      3

Brody Gates' goal with 3:10 left tied it up and gave Traverse City Central a draw with Midland Dow.

Ryan Haworth set up the game-tying goal.

Jack Dulude and Reilly deTar scored Central's other goals, with Grant Dulude adding an assist.

Colin Lesoski made five saves for the Trojans (9-5-4).

Central (12-2-1) won the JV game 1-0 on a Noah Aulicino goal set up by Lukas Battle. Elliot Stratton was in goal for the shutout.
