Mancelona ties Onaway in Ski Valley

MANCELONA — The Mancelona baseball team’s path to a share of the Ski Valley Conference championship was both difficult and unique.

The Ironmen had to finish two previously started league doubleheaders against two different teams in games that had been rescheduled and cancelled five times. But the Ironmen came through nevertheless, coming back from an 6-4 deficit against Bellaire to post an 8-6 victory, then turned around and finished up a 12-5 win over Forest Area.

The wins gave Mancelona a 14-2 record in the Ski Valley, tying the Ironmen for first with Onaway.

Cody Pinney had a two-run single in the fifth for the Ironmen, the biggest hit of a four-run inning that turned a two-run deficit into a two-run lead. It was Mancelona’s second straight day facing Bellaire, after posting a 6-4 win over the Eagles in Tuesday’s district championship game.

The second game of the afternoon began with Mancelona holding an 8-5 lead. The Ironmen tacked on four runs to complete the victory and the co-championship.

Mancelona faces Glen Lake on Saturday in a regional semifinal.
