TRAVERSE CITY — Matt Grost netted three goals while Adam Stepan added two goals and assist as Traverse City Central defeated Ogemaw Heights 7-0 in a Big North Conference soccer match Tuesday at the Coast Guard field.
Owen Stratton and Jacob Muessig also tallied for the Trojans (2-1-1), who led 3-0 at the break. Connor Hansen, Marshall Mast, Lars Hornburg and Jack Brewer also contributed assists.
Danny Brott and Josh Belcher shared goaltending duties.
Central hosts Cadillac on Thursday.
TC Christian 1
Cam Beemer’s second half unassisted goal accounted for all the scoring in Traverse City Christian’s 1-0 win over Bellaire.
Beemer’s kick came from outside the 18.
David Bump posted the shutout, stopping six shots.
Christian hosts Mason County Central on Thursday.
Suttons Bay 2
Suttons Bay dropped a 3-2 decision to Lincoln-Alcona in a season-opening non-league road match.
Logan Mikesell netted the two Suttons Bay goals. The second one came on a free kick.
The Norsemen trailed 1-0 at the break.
Suttons Bay hosts Ludington on Thursday.
Glen Lake 3
Riley Scanlon and Reiss Skrocki each had an goal and an assist as Glen Lake blanked Manistee 3-0.
Freshman Glen Bredin added a penalty kick for the Lakers, who evened their record at 1-1.
Glen Lake faces Northport today.
Gladiators upend McBain, Glen Lake
St. Francis swept McBain and Glen Lake in a pair of non-league volleyball matches Tuesday.
The Gladiators beat McBain 25-23, 25-22 and Glen Lake 25-11, 25-17.
St. Francis (5-2) was led by Haley Bussell (11 kills, eight digs), Laura Kirchofer (18 assists, six digs, four aces), Madeline Rysztak (nine kills, eight digs, two aces) and Hannah Stachnik (nine digs).
The Gladiators compete in the Leland tournament on Thursday.
Frankfort beats GTA to win invitational
Frankfort defeated Grand Traverse Academy 26-24, 25-17 to capture its own invitational.
Grand Traverse Academy reached the finals by beating Mason County Eastern (25-16, 25-10) in the quarterfinals and Manistee Catholic (25-17, 25-13) in the semifinals.
In pool play, the Mustangs downed Buckley (21-14, 21-11), split with Traverse City Christian (18-21, 21-16) and beat Manistee Catholic (21-16, 21-13).
In the finals against Frankfort, Abi Schwanke and Rachel Peterson had nine aces and Mira Witkowski eight.
Christian reached the semifinals before losing to the host Panthers 14-25, 22-25.
Overall, the Sabres finished the day 2-1-2.
Christian beat Mason County Central (21-8, 23-21) and Onekama (25-23, 25-10) and split with Grand Traverse Academy (21-18, 16-21) and Buckley (21-10, 15-21).
Leading the Sabres: Abryanna Cannon (22 kills, eight aces), Mikayla Brett (19 kills, six blocks), Rylee Price (12 kills) and Aubrey Heersema (12 aces).
Christian is at Bear Lake on Thursday.
Leland finishes 0-4 in Northview Invite
Leland moved up in competition to play in the large school Northview Invitational.
The Comets finished 0-4, dropping matches to Grand Haven (10-25, 21-25), Forest Hills Central (25-19, 14-25, 8-15, Northview (15-25, 11-25) and Lakewood (22-25, 18-25).
Leland (1-6-3) was led by Noa Yaakoby (21 kills, 12 digs, three blocks, two aces), Maddie Trumbull (10 kills, two blocks), Felicia Whittaker (11 kills, three aces), Heather Burns (seven kills), Caitlin McKee (42 assists, 17 digs) and Whitney Schaub (23 digs).
Leland hosts an eight-team tournament Thursday.
Lakers beat Manistee at Manistee National
Nichole Cox earned medalist honors with a 38 as Glen Lake defeated Manistee 184-235 in a nine-hole match at Manistee National.
Nicole Pace added a 45, Madison Hill a 48 and Melanie Kulanda a 53 for the Lakers. Fallon Gates led Manistee with a 47.
Glen Lake is off until Sept. 5 when the Lakers host Harbor Springs at Mistwood.
Glads sweep Ludington, West tops SF
Rain turned an invitational into duals for St. Francis and Traverse City West.
With matches moved inside to the YMCA and Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, regional rivals St. Francis and Ludington squared off in two duals — with the Gladiators sweeping. West then beat St. Francis in a dual.
In the first match of the day, Ludington played St. Francis with a few players taking different positions and mixing up the line up as part of early season play, ending in a 5-3 Gladiator victory. Victorious for St. Francis: Jack Krcmarik (6-3, 6-4), Patrick Burke (6-2, 6-3), Blake Bandrowski and Brady Ray (6-4, 6-4), Jay Jones and Nathan Tafelsky (6-3, 6-2) and Jackson Richmond and Victor Casler (4-6, 6-2, 10-8).
In the second match, St. Francis and Ludington dualed with each player in their season positions, with a default by both teams at No. 1 singles, resulting in a 7-0 Gladiator win. St. Francis had wins from Gus Danz (6-1, 6-1), Krcmarik (6-3, 6-0), Burke (6-1, 6-3), Bandrowski and Jones (6-0, 6-1), Tafelsky and Ray (6-4, 6-0), Ryan Navin and Tyler Spigarelli (6-3, 6-3) and Richmond and Casler (6-3, 6-2).
In a pro set match, West downed St. Francis 5-3. The Titans picked up wins from John Linenger and Taylor Brown (8-6) at No. 1 doubles, Kieran Laursen and Mitch Winowiecki (8-5) at No. 2 and David Mather and Erik Anton at No. 3. Jeff Linenger won No. 1 singles and Ashton Lawton No. 4 singles for West.
St. Francis had wins from Danz at No. 2 singles, Krcmarik at No. 3 and Richmond and Steven Winkler at No. 4 doubles.
