Trojans win Summer Splash

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central swept all four doubles flights Wednesday to capture the four-team Summer Splash tennis tournament here.

The Trojans finished with 16 points — 12 coming in doubles. Grandville took second with 13, Rochester third with 11 and Holland West Ottawa fourth with 8.

“Our depth was key,” Central coach Larry Nykerk said.

Hayden Drury and Caleb Heimburger took No. 1 doubles by beating Rochester (6-1, 6-1), West Ottawa (6-2, 6-1) and Grandville (7-5, 6-4). Yani Beeker and Parker Berden captured No. 2 by disposing of Grandville (6-3, 6-1), West Ottawa (6-4, 6-2) and Rochester (6-2, 4-6, 10-6). Jack Seymour and Austin Weiland claimed No. 3 by upending West Ottawa (6-1, 6-3), Grandville (6-0, 6-1) and Rochester (7-6, 6-2). Michael Meindertsma and Spencer Kroupa won No. 4 by defeating Grandville (6-2, 6-0), West Ottawa (6-0, 6-2) and Rochester (6-3, 6-2).

Central’s Cam Young was runner-up at No. 3 singles. He beat Grandville (6-4, 5-7, 10-8) and West Ottawa (6-0, 6-0) before falling to Rochester (4-6, 7-5, 10-8).

Max Knoblock at No. 2 and Nick Yergens at No. 4 each won a match.

The Trojans host the Kickoff Invitational on Saturday.
