Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — LAKE ORION — Traverse City West won its second consecutive Division 1 regional at Boulder Pointe Golf Course on Thursday, edging Rochester Stoney Creek by three strokes.
The Titans finished with a 302. Stoney Creek came in at 305 and Rochester Adams 307. All three teams advance to the state finals next weekend at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West course.
Traverse City Central tied for seventh with a 316. Central’s Winton Munch earned medalist honors with a two-under 70, qualifying for the state finals as an individual.
But this day belonged to West.
“I’m happy for the boys that they were able to pull this off,” Titans coach Mike Schultz said. “We had a lot of expectations coming into this season, and we haven’t been putting up the scores we all wanted to see. To take this, and stamp our ticket for the state (finals), was a proud moment. It was a good day for us.”
Cam Murray led West, firing an even-par 72 that tied him for third overall. Alex Scott and Brady Greenman each carded a 75. Payden Myers followed with an 80.
The course played long at 6,600 yards. That proved a benefit for the Titans.
“It takes some players, some teams out of the field when you add length to the golf course,” Schultz said. “It helped us, though, because we’ve got guys that can hit it a long ways. All the boys hit the ball well today.”
West shot a 316 in last week’s district. That was second to Swartz Creek, which tied Central at 316 on Thursday.
“Every coach hopes that you’re peaking when you get into the state tournament,” Schultz said. “We knew we could shoot lower scores than we have.”
No one shot lower than Munch.
“He played so well,” Central coach Dave McMellen said of his senior. “He kept it in control. He was due.”
Two other seniors, Trey Pezzetti and Riley Boyd, shot 81 and 82, respectively. Abe Lewis came in at 83.
PETOSKEY TRIUMPHS: It was quite a day for the Big North Conference as Petoskey, Ogemaw Heights and Gaylord swept the top three spots in the Division 2 regional at Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden to earn berths in the state finals.
Petoskey shot a 322, Ogemaw Heights 327 and Gaylord 327.
The Northmen were led by Tyler Speigl’s 79. He was followed by Cam Ludlow at 80, Colin Green at 81 and Silas Lee at 82.
Steve Kish fired an 80 for Ogemaw Heights. Jon Robinson chipped in 81, Jon Matthews 82 and Jake Ignasiak 84.
Cam Laug paced Gaylord with a 75. Nick Fennell added an 80 and Kyle Bazzani and Mike Misiak 86. Ogemaw Heights won the tiebreaker with Gaylord for second, based on the score of the teams fifth golfer.
