Traverse City West repeats; Central's Munch is medalist

LAKE ORION — Traverse City West won its second consecutive Division 1 regional at Boulder Pointe Golf Course on Thursday, edging Rochester Stoney Creek by three strokes.

The Titans finished with a 302. Stoney Creek came in at 305 and Rochester Adams 307. All three teams advance to the state finals next weekend at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West course.

Traverse City Central tied for seventh with a 316. Central’s Winton Munch earned medalist honors with a two-under 70, qualifying for the state finals as an individual.

But this day belonged to West.

“I’m happy for the boys that they were able to pull this off,” Titans coach Mike Schultz said. “We had a lot of expectations coming into this season, and we haven’t been putting up the scores we all wanted to see. To take this, and stamp our ticket for the state (finals), was a proud moment. It was a good day for us.”

Cam Murray led West, firing an even-par 72 that tied him for third overall. Alex Scott and Brady Greenman each carded a 75. Payden Myers followed with an 80.

The course played long at 6,600 yards. That proved a benefit for the Titans.

“It takes some players, some teams out of the field when you add length to the golf course,” Schultz said. “It helped us, though, because we’ve got guys that can hit it a long ways. All the boys hit the ball well today.”

West shot a 316 in last week’s district. That was second to Swartz Creek, which tied Central at 316 on Thursday.

“Every coach hopes that you’re peaking when you get into the state tournament,” Schultz said. “We knew we could shoot lower scores than we have.”

No one shot lower than Munch.

“He played so well,” Central coach Dave McMellen said of his senior. “He kept it in control. He was due.”
