Bums hit Crushers, 12-5

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums didn’t waste any time getting a jump on the Lake Erie Crushers in Tuesday’s series opener.

The Beach Bums scored six runs in the first inning and nine over the first two innings as they used that to propel them to a 12-5 victory at Wuerfel Park.

Chase Burch went 3-for-5, including a double and a triple, and drove in two runs, but he was only one of several Beach Bums to have a big offensive game in one of Traverse City’s most explosive nights at the plate this year. Taylor Wrenn matched Burch with three hits, belting a home run and driving in two runs, Zach Kometani was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs, Chris Cowell homered among two hits and drove in a pair, and Ryan Still was 2-for-4.

Those big bats allowed Traverse City (9-7) to knock Lake Erie starter Trevor Longfellow (2-2) from the game after only .2 innings. Longfellow allowed six runs on four hits and walked one in a rough outing. Spencer Clifft, who took over for Longfellow, didn’t initally have much luck either, surrendering four runs on six hits.

Scott Dunn (3-0) remained unbeaten on the season, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out five.

Trailing 9-0 entering the third, Lake Erie (6-10) finally got on the board in that inning, but the Crushers couldn’t make up the difference of their early deficit.

Russell Moldenhauer went 2-for-4 for the Crushers, including a two-run home run in the seventh that made it a 10-4 game. Andrew Davis and Max Casper also collected two hits each.

Wrenn, Kometani and Cowell were the sparkplugs to Traverse City’s fast start, each slugging a two-run extra-base hit in their first trips to the plate to end Longfellow’s night early.

The two teams resume action tonight at Wuerfel Park, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
