Liggett's Ristovski is AP Class C Player of Year

EAST LANSING (AP) — Haleigh Ristovski of Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett had the size and ball-handling skills to take the ball to the basket and the talent to knock down the long-range shot.

Ristovski headlines the Associated Press Class C All-State team as the Player of the Year. She averaged 15.5 points, 11.2 rebounds, six assists and four blocks to help Liggett make another deep run into the state tournament.

Ristovski, a 5-foot-10 senior guard/forward, was also a strong defender, blocking 10 shots to keep Liggett close in an early season loss to Class B defending champion Goodrich. Ristovski will play her college ball at Detroit.

Jacqueline Simpson of Burton Bendle, Jenna Hirsch of Marlette, Karli Herrington of Hemlock, Reyna Frost of Reese, Taylor Hengesbach of Saginaw Nouvel, Karina Cole of Lincoln Alcona, Meredith Hamlet of McBain, Sydney Czurak of Shelby, Jackie Oestrich of Ann Arbor Greenhills and Zakiya Wells and Nastassja Chambers of Ypsilanti Arbor Prep were also first-team All-State.

Rod Wells of Ypsilanti Arbor Prep was named Coach of the Year, guiding the second-year charter school — which has no senior class — to a 15-5 record and a spot in the district championship game.

Simpson, a 6-foot senior forward, averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds for Burton Bendle. She will play next year at Central Michigan.

Hirsch, a 5-7 senior guard, helped Marlette to an 18-2 regular-season record. She averaged 21.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and five steals and will play at Youngstown State.

Herrington, a 6-2 junior center, averaged a double-double (19 points, 15 rebounds) and is committed to play at Central Michigan.

Frost, a 6-foot sophomore forward, averaged 15.5 points and 12.3 rebounds for a Reese team that went 20-0 during the regular season.

Hengesbach, a 5-9 senior forward, averaged 15 points and eight rebounds for an 18-2 Saginaw Nouvel team.

Cole, a 5-10 junior guard, averaged 23.7 points and 5.3 steals for Lincoln Alcona.
