Prep Sports Roundup: Traverse City Central girls ski to win

Petoskey boys also finish first. (Plus more)

HARBOR SPRINGS — TC Central's girls and Petoskey's boys each cruised to victory Thursday at the Big North Conference ski meet at Nub's Nob.

The Trojans won the girls meet with 37 points, followed by Petoskey (61), TC West (68), Cadillac (132) and Gaylord (192).

TC Central's Madison Ostergren won the giant slalom in 56.52 seconds and was third in the slalom (1:08.42). Teammate Shannon Weaver won the slalom (1:07.17) and was second in the GS (57.30). Cassidy Klein was fourth in the slalom (1:09.11) and seventh in the GS (59.77), Paige Pfannenstiel was eighth in the GS (59.98) and Molly Whiting was 11th in the slalom (1:15.84).

TC West's Monica Hessler was second in the slalom (1:07.69) and third in the GS (57.53). Claire Podges was sixth in the GS (59.72) and 13th in the slalom (1:17.15), Morgan Culp was ninth in the slalom (1:12.82) and 13th in the GS (1:01.47) while Kitt Hornbogen was 10th in the slalom (1:15.55) and 12th in the GS (1:00.98).

In the boys meet, Petoskey won with 36 points, thanks to Gunnar Lunteigen finishing first in the slalom (1:02.29). Cadillac was second with 80 points as Keenan Cooper won the GS (48.65).

TC Central finished third with 89 points, which was a half-point better than TC West (89.5).

For the Trojans, John Whiting was ninth in the GS (50.96), Kurt Frick was 10th (51.19), Tyler Sepanik 11th (51.26) and Dirk Phelps 12th (51.33). In the slalom, Lars Hornburg was ninth (1:09.20), Phelps was 11th (1:10.23), Jacob Gerstner was 13th (1:10.63) and Frick was 14th (1:11.19).

TC West was second as a team in the slalom. Finley Clark was second (1:03.77), Alex Podges was 10th (1:10.14), Austin Skibowski was 12th (1:10.52) and Brian Friar was 15th (1:12.54). In the GS, Matt Lowe was sixth (49.65), Clark was eighth (50.08), Skibowski was 13th (51.36) and Podges was 23rd (1:03.77).

BOYS HOOPS

Cadillac      56 TC West      53

Cadillac held on for a 56-53 Big North Conference win over visiting TC West.

The Titans (9-4, 6-2 BNC) had a good look to tie the score at the end of the game, but the 3-pointer just missed.

Cadillac (10-2, 5-2) had 15 points from Justin Piptak while Matthew Adams scored 12 points.

TC West had 20 points and five rebounds from Jeremiah Williams, 13 points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists from Kendrick Meyer, 10 points from Alex Scott and six rebounds, three assists and two steals from Donny Cizek.

In the JV game, TC West won 46-35. The Titans (7-6, 4-4 BNC) had 10 points from Thiyo Lukusa, seven points from Deion Dyal, six from Austin Cleary and seven rebounds from Trevor Goudey.

The Titans took the freshman game 54-25. Jard Roth and K.J. Sayer each had 15 points for West (8-3).

GIRLS HOOPS

Gaylord St. Mary      62 Pellston      16

Gaylord St. Mary moved to 14-2 on the season with a 62-16 Ski Valley Conference win over Pellston.

The Snowbirds (11-1 SVC) had 16 points from Kari Borowiak while Mary Spyhalski scored 15 points.

Kelly Lewis had five points for the Hornets.

Onaway      38 Inland Lakes      32

Onaway picked up a 38-32 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.

Kallie Shimel led the Cardinals (11-4, 8-4 SVC) with 12 points.

McBain      79 Lake City      37

McBain had four players score in double-digits for a 79-37 Highland Conference win over Lake City.

Ramblers sophomore Meredith Hamlet had a triple-double with 20 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds. McBain (7-5, 6-2 HC) also had 15 points and five rebounds from Madison Barnette, 12 points from Samantha Bode and 10 points and six steals from Kara Hughston.

Manistee Catholic      54 Brethren      39

Manistee Catholic moved to 10-0 in the Western Michigan D League with a 54-39 win over Brethren.

The Sabers (13-1) had 15 points, five rebounds and three assists from Alysha Heck while Mia Hogan, Amber Robke and Haley Doyle each scored 10 points. Megan Miller had eight rebounds, Robke added seven while Doyle had six rebounds and three steals.
