Registration starts for Little League

TRAVERSE CITY — Registration is underway for the Traverse City Little League season.

Interested players can register online through March 2 at

Walk-up registration will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at MC Sports. A second walk-up registration will be offered Feb. 24 from 2-4 p.m. at MC Sports.

TC Central to hold youth baseball clinic

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central will host a baseball clinic Feb. 23 for players in grades 2-6.

The 9 a.m. to noon event will cover baseball fundamentals. The cost is $50 per player. Shirt is included.

Mail check to TC Central Baseball, 1150 Milliken Dr., Traverse City, Mich., 49686. Include shirt size, grade and email or phone number.

Otwell third in mile at ND Invite

EAST LANSING — Julia Otwell, who prepped at Traverse City Central, placed third in the mile Saturday in the Notre Dame Invitational.

Otwell, one of three Michigan State runners in the top four, finished in 4:56.93. Teammate Sara Kroll won in 4:48.51.

Ex-North Star earns CCHA honors

BIG RAPIDS — Former Traverse City North Stars goalie CJ Motte, now a sophomore at Ferris State University, has claimed Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Goaltender of the Week accolades.

Motte posted back to back wins over Michigan State over the weekend. He had 27 saves in a 2-1 road win on Friday before a sellout crowd of more than 6,000 fans at Munn Ice Arena. On Saturday, the Bulldog netminder came back with 17 saves in a 5-2 victory at a sold-out Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

Two other former North Stars at Ferris, Andy Huff and Kyle Bonis, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors earlier this season.

Area games to be broadcast

LANSING — Nine area prep basketball games are on tap to be broadcast on in the next week.

Highlights of selected games produced by MHSAA members participating in the Student Broadcast Program include Wednesday's Wolverine at Alba boys game, Friday's Newberry at Cheboygan girls hoop game and both the boys and girls games in Friday's Cadillac at Petoskey matchups.

Next Monday's Boyne City at Cheboygan girls game and Mancelona at Ellsworth boys contest are also slated for broadcast, as well as the Jan. 29 Petoskey at Charlevoix and Alanson at Ellsworth girls basketball and Boyne City at Cheboygan boys basketball games.
