Cizek scores 14 of his 19 points in second half


ALPENA — Donny Cizek and Traverse City West put on a second-half surge to rally for a 64-62 boys basketball victory Thursday over Big North Conference foe Alpena.

Cizek scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half as the Titans trailed by 13 at the intermission. He added seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Fellow senior Jeremiah Williams scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and added six rebounds and three assists, while Kendrick Meyer had seven points and five rebounds. Will Reed and Johnny Wheelock played solid defense.

"Our seniors really stepped up at the end, especially Donny Cizek," West coach Brett Graham said. "Kendrick Meyer battled foul trouble and scored all seven of his points in the second (half)."

The Titans (5-2, 3-0 BNC) host fellow league unbeaten Petoskey on Tuesday.

Tyler Pintar scored 20 for Alpena, while Luke Cordes had 14.

Alpena won the junior varsity game 56-37. West was led by nine points from Jeff Turnquist and seven off the bench by Connor Lynch.

Logan Nickerson scored 12 and Jared Roth 10 as TC West won the freshman game 73-26 to improve to 6-1.


Bear Lake      63 Manistee Catholic      62

Bryson Waller hit a long 3-pointer heave at the buzzer to give Bear Lake a 63-62 victory over Manistee Catholic Central.

Waller finished with 23 points and Cody Brown added 10 for the Lakers (3-1), who trailed 38-33 at halftime.

Zach Bialik led Manistee CC with 28 points, but the Sabers (2-2) let their lead slip away with a 2-for-8 free throw performance in the fourth quarter. Ben Faliczak added 13 points and sophomore Blake Vargas scored 12 in his first varsity game.

Cadillac      59 Ogemaw Heights      46

Nick Paquet's 24 points led Cadillac to a 59-46 Big North Conference win over Ogemaw Heights.

Jalen Brooks added 14 points for the Vikings (4-2, 1-2 BNC).

Gaylord St. Mary      71 Pellston      45

Gaylord St. Mary jumped out to a 38-22 halftime lead en route to a 71-45 Ski Valley Conference victory over Pellston.

Cameron Juneac scored 17 points to lead the Snowbirds (4-2, 2-2 SVC), while Matt Spyhalski added 16, Charles Strehl 14 and Nick Lochinski 12.

Jake Friedenstad scored 22 points for Pellston (1-4), and Tanner Keller had 15.

St. Mary travels Tuesday to Bellaire.

St. Francis JV      60 Harbor Springs JV      40

Michael Olm led Traverse City St. Francis to a 60-40 junior varsity win over Harbor Springs.

Matt Seybert added 11 points and Patrick Lewis and Jack Krcmarik had 10 each for the Gladiators (4-2).

The Glads host the Rams in varsity action tonight.


Manton      51 Evart      39

Tori Vogelaar scored 17 points to lead Manton to its first Highland Conference win of the season, a 51-39 victory over Evart.

Vogelaar added seven rebounds, while Jurrica Stanley had 13 points and five rebounds.

The Rangers (2-5, 1-2 HC) travel to Buckley tonight.

McBain      54 Lake City      30

McBain handed Lake City its first loss of the season, surging to an early lead en route to a 54-30 victory in Highland play.

The host Ramblers (3-3, 2-1) employed an aggressive, ball-hawking defense to force several turnovers and build a 22-6 lead over the first 12 minutes.

Junior guards Maddie Barnette and Kara Hughston had six and four steals, respectively, and each scored six points for McBain. Hughston and freshman Asia LaGrow each pulled down eight boards. Sophomore Meredith Hamlet paced the Ramblers with a game-high 16 points, including three treys.

Makayla Schichtel and Maggie Eising each scored seven for Lake City (6-1, 2-1) and Schichtel also grabbed six rebounds.

Pine River      69 McBain NMC     42

Northern Michigan Christian (4-3, 1-2 Highland) struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against visiting Pine River and fell 69-42. The Comets trailed 21-9 after one quarter and 39-18 at the half.

NMC senior Paige Schoo scored 11 with 11 rebounds for a double-double while junior Emma Towers tallied nine and freshman Sara Pluger hit for seven.

Jamie Justin paced the Bucks (6-1, 2-0) with 14 points. Cayman Gatt scored 12 and Kassy Nelson hit for 11.
