Benzie extends track championship streaks

From staff reports

EAST JORDAN — Benzie Central’s seniors kept their regional streaks intact Saturday at East Jordan.

Benzie captured its sixth consecutive girls Division 3 track title, finishing with 171 points. Charlevoix was second (83) and Kingsley third (81).

The boys stretched their regional championship string to four, edging Charlevoix 140-122.

“Our seniors never lost in the regionals,” Benzie coach Asa Kelly said. “That was one of our goals today.”

The boys had the tougher challenge, but rode a “dominant” day by Corey Bock to the championship.

Bock won the 110 high hurdles (15.9), the 300 hurdles (40.8) and the long jump (20’4”).

Benzie also scored big in the high jump as Drew Byrd and Aaron Whaley tied for first (5’9”).

The Huskies added three individual seconds — Tim Smith in the shot put (48’4”), Javier Rodriguez in the long jump (19’9”) and Gerrit Buist in the 800 (2:00). Benzie was also second in the 3200 relay.

Kingsley’s Tristan Eickenroth and East Jordan’s Josh Wojan were double-winners. Eickenroth claimed the shot put (49’8”) and 100 (11.52) while Wojan captured the 1600 (4:27) and 3200 (9:43).

Charlevoix won three relays — the 400 (46.1), 1600 (3:35.4) and 3200 (8:14) and came in second in the 800.

The Rayders’ Nick Plude won the open 800 (1:59).

Kalkaska’s Zach Cameron took the discus (146’5”). Lake City won four events — Ryan Simpson the pole vault (13’6”), Dan Cuevas the 400 (57.5), Jeramie Lyle the 200(23.5) and the 800 relay.

Alikay Hamilton and Jordan Nye led the Benzie girls to victory. Both were part of four firsts. Hamilton swept the 100 (13.28) and 200 (27.1) and was on the victorious 400 (51.42) and 800 (1:48.1) relays. Nye took the long jump (16’3”) and was on the 400, 800 and 1600 (4:10) relays.

“Across the board our girls performed really well,” said Kelly, who coaches the team with his wife Traci. “We’re sending girls in 13 of the 17 events to the state finals. We’ve never had that many events represented before, at least since we started coaching nine years ago. It will be a full bus on the way down to states.”
