Prep Sports Roundup: Buckley, Mesick split twinbill

Cheboygan topped Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian 3-1.

Natascha Vinz scored a goal, Shelby Donovan made 17 saves and Mariah Salter, Abigail Vertican and Rebekah Leonard played solid games.


TC Central 8

Alpena 0

Traverse City Central was playing its fourth event in five days and had to travel to Alpena to do it.

If the Trojans were tired, you wouldn’t know it.

Central routed the Wildcats 8-0, dropping only eight games in the process. No flight lost more than two of those in the team’s first Big North Conference dual.

The Trojans had singles victories by Paige Cooley (6-0, 6-0), Kelly Milliken (6-1, 6-1), Christi Druskovich (6-0, 6-1) and Taylor Weckstein (6-0, 6-0).

Doubles wins came from Kitty Mast/Elizabeth Pappas (6-0, 6-2), Leah Potter/Katie Raymond (6-0, 6-2), Kyle Dotterrer/Abby Palisin (6-0, 6-0) and Amelia Pezzetti/Molly Whiting (6-1, 6-0).

The Trojans have a scrimmage against Grandville on Friday before participating in Saturday’s Holland Invitational.

Petoskey 6

TC West 2

Petoskey swept the doubles flights to earn a 6-2 Big North Conference dual win over Traverse City West.

West’s win came from Morgan Harris at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3) and Jill Turnquist at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-4).

Petoskey’s Lizzie VanAlst (6-1, 6-2) and Megan Lorenz (6-2, 6-7, 7-6) won singles matches, while the doubles teams of Katie Bergmann/Morgan Kelley (7-5, 4-7, 6-4), Emily Lapine/Alex Knaisel (6-1, 6-2), Lauren Munch/Cassie O’Hagen (6-3, 6-4) and Rachel Porter/Shaina Uretha (6-1, 6-2) earned victories.

TC St. Francis 6

Elk Rapids 2

St. Francis won the top three flights in singles and doubles to capture a girls tennis meet against host Elk Rapids, 6-2, on Monday.

No. 1 singles player Angie Aboudib took a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Beth Swan won 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 at No. 2 and Nicole Ehardt posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3.

At No. 1 doubles, Emily Weitzel and Jenna Tomczak won 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Jessica Pax and Lily Ambrosius won 6-3, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team of Emma Schmitz and Alex Middleton were victorious 6-2, 6-3.
