Prep Sports Roundup: Buckley, Mesick split twinbill


Katie Wheeler made four saves to help Traverse City Central hold on to a 1-1 tie with Big North Conference foe Petoskey.

Jalyna Cisneros scored off a Grace Stanton assist for Central, and Brigitte Bunter set up Liz Fraser’s goal for Petoskey.

Kelsey Ance had two saves for the Northmen (1-3-2, 1-3-1 BNC). The Trojans (4-5-1, 3-1-1 BNC) travel Thursday to Gaylord.

The junior varsity game also ended in a 1-1 deadlock, as Greta Groothuis scored off a Megan Puckett assist for Central, Carrie Wynkoop made three saves and Cara Ferguson and Tori Huggins were solid at midfield and defense.

Traverse City West couldn’t hold on to a 2-0 lead and ended up having to settle for a 2-2 tie in girls soccer against Gaylord on Tuesday.

Maria Rapson and Erica Whiting scored for the Titans (5-2-1, 3-1 Big North) in the first 29 minutes. Assists went to Jessica Kalbfleisch and Rapson. But the Blue Devils rallied with a goal before the end of the first half and added the equalizer with six minutes left. West had the play the entire second half a player down after one of the Titans received a red card.

Savannah Wojtanowski saw 11 shots in goal for West.

Kingsley 3

Benzie Central 1

Kingsley earned an A on Tuesday.

The Stags won 3-1 over Benzie Central, with each of the three Kingsley goal scorers’ names starting with the letter A.

Ally Kintner and Autumn Goggin each had a goal and an assist and Ally Clark scored off a corner kick for the other goal.

Kasey Hayes made three saves in net for Kingsley (2-2-2, 2-1-2 Northwest Girls Soccer Conference), which travels Friday to Kalkaska.

Sam Bennett scored Benzie’s goal, with an assist from Megan Kubit. Elizabeth Putnam was in goal for the Huskies, who host Glen Lake on Monday.

Carley Patterson scored four goals and Hailey Patterson added two goals and two assists as Elk Rapids dominated Kalkaska in a 6-0 girls soccer win on Tuesday.
