Prep Sports Roundup: Blazers open with sweep

EAST JORDAN — Kalkaska opened its softball season Thursday with a pair of shutout wins over Lake Michigan Conference rival East Jordan, 9-0 and 5-0.

Ellie Barber threw a no-hitter in the first game, striking out six. In the second game Megan Myas allowed two hits and struck out four.

Jessie Plude had three hits and an RBI for Kalkaska in the opener. Taylor Birgy added two hits and scored three runs, while Kelli Guy had a hit and two RBIs. Freshman Amber Zimmerman collected her first career hit.

Guy had two more hits and scored three runs in the second game. Olivia Koons doubled and had two RBIs, Plude drove in a run and Jaycee Helsel doubled.

The Blazers host St. Francis on Tuesday.

Benzie Central 7 15

Ludington 8 0

Caroline Worden threw a no-hitter in Benzie Central’s 15-0 win over Ludington in the second game of a softball doubleheader on Thursday. In the first game Ludington pulled out an 8-7 win in seven innings.

Worden struck out four in the three-inning mercy. At the plate, Missy Sass went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Charlotte Warsecke added two hits and two RBIs and Mariah Hansen added a hit and an RBI.

In the first game Benzie (2-4) battled back to tie the game in the fifth inning and again in the sixth to force extra innings, then watched the Orioles win it one inning later.

Shannon Murray had a double among two hits with three RBIs and Dani Gomuliuski had a hit and two RBIs.

Megan Popp came one out from throwing a no-hitter as Lake Leelanau St. Mary defeated Traverse City Christian 3-0 in the first game of a softball doubleheader. In the second game the Eagles routed the Sabres 19-3.

Popp, who fanned 10 and walked two, didn’t give up a hit until there were two out in the sixth inning.
