Prep Volleyball Roundup: 10/31/2012

GAYLORD — Traverse City West and Traverse City Central will meet for the third time in volleyball.

That was decided Tuesday when the two teams scored 3-0 wins in their Class A district openers at Gaylord.

West beat Alpena 25-11, 25-5 and 25-12 while Central ousted Marquette 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.

The teams will meet at 1 o'clock Saturday in a semifinal here.

The Titans (26-14-1) dominated Alpena.

"We've had some good practices," coach Emily Baumann said. "We came out and were very aggressive. We know it's single elimination from here on out. It's time to shine."

The Titans were led by Katie Placek (four aces, 11 kills, five blocks, 13 digs), Courtney VanHouzen (five aces, five kills, seven digs), Anna O'Hara (nine kills), Kimmy Bilinski (five digs), Mattison Mokanyk (20 assists) and Megan Traines (seven kills).

The Trojans were able to take care of the Redettes in straight sets.

"Our hitting was on today and we passed well," Trojans coach Katherine Brege said. "We got back to normal playing with more consistency."

Brie Goodno had 11 kills and three aces for the Trojans (21-16-2) while Kiley Kowal had 11 kills, Jessie Kushner had seven kills a block and four digs and Maddy Duensing had 29 assists.

What's Baumann expect from her team Saturday?

"I expect us to come out strong and play our game," she said.

"We're excited about it," Brege said. "It's always fun to play them."


Benzie Central      3 Manistee      0

Benzie Central won its Class B district opener with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-14 win over Manistee.

The Huskies (36-8-7) had 13 assists from Molly Lehn, Jenna Gauthier had seven kills, Madison Lutzke had 11 kills and perfect serving from Maggie Geetings (15-15), Emily Scott (8-8) and Lutzke (5-5).

Benzie plays Mason Co. Central on Thursday.

Elks, Lake City advance at Glen Lake

Elk Rapids beat Mancelona 25-12, 17-25, 25-11, 25-14 in its Clas C district opener at Glen Lake.

The Elks were led by the blocking of Gabrielle Gualtiere and Rachel Hintz, the serving of Kendyl Weekley (seven aces) and Megan Henige (five aces) and the front row play of Kyra Lundy and Henige.

The Elks face Manton on Thursday.
