Prep Basketball Roundup: Lakers claim 'must' win

MAPLE CITY — Glen Lake’s back in the Northwest Conference title hunt.

Seniors Carter Lee and Logan LaCross combined for 45 points Wednesday night as the Lakers handed Suttons Bay its first league loss, 61-54.

The Norsemen dropped to 5-1 in the league, 7-2 overall. Glen Lake improved to 4-2 in the league, 6-4 overall.

“It was a must win,” Glen Lake coach Todd Hazelton said. “We needed this to stay in the league race. The kids did a great job.”

The Lakers led by 21, 50-29, after three quarters, then had to withstand a Norsemen comeback. Suttons Bay hit five 3-pointers in outscoring Glen Lake 25-11 in the fourth quarter. But it was not enough.

“We got a little rattled in the fourth quarter,” Hazelton said. “But we held our composure at the end.”

Logan Mikesell scored 24 points. He hit four 3-pointers in the final quarter. Aaron Orban added 14 for the Norsemen, who travel to Kingsley on Friday.

“We dug ourselves a huge hole and we couldn’t come all the way back,” Suttons Bay coach Ron Anderson said. “We knew it was going to be tough going over there.”

Glen Lake travels to Buckley on Friday.

Leland 38

Benzie Central 36

Austin Fellows sank two free throws with 5.5 seconds to go to give Leland a come-from-behind 38-36 Northwest Confernce victory over Benzie Central.

Benzie had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but couldn’t connect on a three-point try.

Leland had to battle back from a tough start as the Comets trailed 9-0 after one period and 21-8 at the half.

Leland was still behind entering the fourth quarter, 31-21.

Tyler Leveque led Leland with 11 points. Benzie Central (4-5, 4-2 Northwest) was paced by Ismael Halaweh’s 16 points.

The Huskies host Frankfort on Friday.

Buckley 30

Frankfort staked out a 32-9 halftime lead on the way to a 70-30 victory over Buckley.
