Sports in Brief: U-M's Rawls to transfer to CMU

ANN ARBOR — Michigan running back Thomas Rawls is one of three players who have been granted a release by the school.

Rawls along with safety Josh Furman and defensive tackle Richard Ash can now transfer. Rawls reportedly will transfer to Central Michigan.

Rawls had a career-low three carries for 12 yards and a touchdown last season as a junior. He ran the ball 57 times for 242 yards and four TDs the previous season.

Furman started three games last season as a junior. He was reinstated to the team in April of 2012 a week after he was found not guilty of assault and other charges.

Ash was a seldom-used reserve during his three-year career with the Wolverines.

NOTRE DAME: Brian Kelly has hired former Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur to hold the same position for the Fighting Irish. LaFleur was fired, along with most of the Redskins staff, after a 3-13 season. He was an offensive assistant under Kelly at Central Michigan in 2004 and 2005.

WISCONSIN: The university athletic board has approved a one-year contract extension for football coach Gary Andersen. The deal now lasts through January 2019. In Andersen’s first season in Madison, the Badgers finished 9-4, falling to South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl.

PURDUE: Defensive backs coach Jon Heacock is taking the defensive coordinator’s job at Toledo.

LIONS: Detroit will hire former Boise State offensive coordinator Robert Prince as its receivers coach, replacing Tim Lappano, according to multiple news outlets. Prince spent the past two seasons as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator. They ranked 68th in offense in 2012, but jumped up to 20th last season. Prince worked with Boise State’s receivers in 2011. He was the Atlanta Falcons’ receivers coach from 2004-06, then became the assistant receivers coach for Jacksonville from 2007-08 and the receivers coach for Seattle in 2009. He returned to college in 2010, becoming Colorado’s passing game coordinator and receivers coach in 2010 before going back to Boise State.
