WEST BRANCH — Traverse City West broke an eight-game losing streak with a 32-26 win over Ogemaw Heights in a Big North Conference girls basketball match-up on Thursday.
Kimmy Bilinski had 10 points and Paris Wagner scored six points and pulled down nine rebounds in the win.
West (2-9, 2-3 Big North) took control in the first quarter and had a 7-2 lead, but Ogemaw battled back and was only down 11-8 at halftime. The contest was close throughout as West made key plays down the stretch to snap its skid.
“We fought through,” said West coach Dave Ginsberg. “It was a big win for us.”
Samantha Hasse had 12 points for Ogemaw.
Ogemaw took the junior varsity game 25-14.
West won the freshman game 40-32 as Rose Soma had 10 points and Kyali Hewitt scored eight.
The Titans host Petoskey on Monday.
TC Central 42
After starting 0-5, Alpena won its third game in its last four with a 52-42 victory over Traverse City Central.
Callie Bartkowiak led Central with 14 points, Jennifer Rose added eight and Mary Barbera had seven.
The Trojans (3-9, 3-4 Big North Conference) travel to Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday.
Central (6-6) won the JV game 49-44 as Abby Green scored 13 points, Emily Jenkins 11 and Montana Brumfield 10.
TC Bulldogs 57
GT Academy 33
Beka Wilkinson scored 20 points and added eight rebounds as the Traverse City Bulldogs earned a 57-33 win over Grand Traverse Academy.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 23-5 lead.
Sarah Plamondon contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, while Molly Plamondon had 11 points for the Bulldogs (6-4), who play Traverse City Christian today at 6 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Seton.
Tori Corwin led GT Academy with nine points.
Glen Lake 26
Frankfort stayed undefeated, 11-0, 6-0 Northwest, after a 45-26 victory over Glen Lake.
Pauline Lausten led the Panthers with 14 points and McKenna Kelly had 13 points.
For Glen Lake (5-5), Jordan Peplinski had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Alex LaCross had nine points and three rebounds.
Glen Lake hosts Suttons Bay and Frankfort hosts Buckley tonight.
Muskegon Hts. 26
Manistee blew out Muskegon Heights to stay undefeated.
The Chippewas won 65-26, leading 25-5 after one quarter.
Emma Burns scored 17 points for Manistee (11-0), while Jessica Gustad had nine points, Emily Kott had eight points, five assists and three steals, Audrey Tomaszewski scored eight points and Annie Fuller grabbed seven rebounds.
Kalkaska JV 39
TC St. Francis JV 37
Amber Zimmerman scored 12 points and Taylor Riddle scored 10 as Kalkaska’s junior varsity defeated the Traverse City St. Francis junior varsity 39-37.
Colleen LaBonte of St. Francis had 13 points to lead all scorers, while Nicole Ehardt added 10 points for the Gladiators (5-7).
Suttons Bay 70
Holding a 29-24 lead at the half, Suttons Bay turned it on in the third and fourth quarters, beating Mesick 70-50.
Aaron Orban tallied 16 points for the Norsemen (7-1), who also received 11 points from Casey Cross and 10 from Devin Capron. Mesick was led by Jordan Calhoun with 19 points and Peter Roush with 14.
Led by Tyler Leveque’s 36 points, Leland outscored Buckley 94-69.
Austin Fellows chipped in with 14 points and 10 assists, Cam Stowe dished out 16 assists and Carson Poirier had 10 points for the Comets (4-5, 2-3 Northwest), who travel to Traverse City Christian tonight.
Buckley was led by Dustin Tandy’s 25 points. Michael Rosek had 20 points and Luke Somsel 14 for the Bears.
Mancelona pounced on Joburg early, leading 21-11 at the end of the first quarter and went on to down the Cardinals 57-43.
Brandon Dingman poured in 33 points and had six rebounds for the Ironmen (7-2, 5-1 Ski Valley). Griffin Borst added eight points and seven rebounds, Jake Winstead had five points and five assists and Logan Borst had five assists.
Nathan Fox led Joburg with 18 points and Brandon Huff contributed 13 points.
Wyatt Baker’s 21 points and seven rebounds paced Manton to a 54-32 win over Marion.
Brock Clough had 13 points, Grand Siddall 11 points and Chandler Shazri seven boards for the Rangers, 4-5, who are at Brethren on Saturday.
Bear Lake 82
Reilly Merrill had 20 points, eight boards and four assists, Tyler Johnson added 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Michael Belinsky chipped in 14 points, 10 boards, three steals and four blocks as Bear Lake posted an 82-25 victory over Northport.
The win improves the Lakers to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the West Michigan D League. They face Manistee Catholic Central on Saturday.
Lake City 52
McBain NMC 39
Lake City pulled away in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and outscore Highland Conference foe McBain Northern Michigan Christian 52-39.
Sophomore center Lucas Marion scored on back-to-back possessions to spark a 9-2 run at the outset of the final period as the Trojans (7-3, 4-2) increased their lead to 47-35 with 3:07 left to play. Lake City led 13-11, 23-17 and 36-33 at the quarter breaks.
Marion generated a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double and senior Drew Marion tallied 13 with six boards. Senior guard Dylan Allard hit for nine. Lake City coach Dale Eising also credited Austin Booms with being a physical presence off the bench.
John Brouwer rang up 12 points to pace the Comets (2-7, 1-5) and Kade Ellens hit for 10.
Forest Area 71
Central Lake 59
Justin Burke nearly had a triple-double as Forest Area notched a 71-59 Ski Valley Conference win over Central Lake.
Burke rang up 24 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists.
Trevor Vance added 14 points for the Warriors (4-4, 2-3 SVC), who host Mesick on Monday. Forest Area trailed 32-31 at halftime, but rode the momentum of a 19-9 third quarter to the win.
William Brockman had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Trojans, while, Connor Zook added 13 points. Central Lake falls to 0-8 and 0-6 in SVC action.
TC St. Francis JV 60
Marek Laucky scored a dozen points to lead Traverse City St. Francis to a 60-14 junior varsity victory.
Luke Duell added 11 points for the Gladiators (6-2).
