Blues to host recruiting event

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse Bay Blues will hold a recruiting event for men interested in playing for the 2014 season.

The event will run from 7-10 p.m. at Brewery Ferment on Union Street.

Snowmobile Fun Run slated

KALKASKA — The 10th annual Snowmobile Fun Run on Feb. 8 will benefit Crawford County United Way.

The event begins at noon at Dingman’s Bar in Kalkaska. From there, participants will ride to three host locations along the route.

Funds raised will help boost the annual allocation fund distributed to local human services agencies and community projects serving citizens of Crawford County.

The entry fee is $25 per person and the registration form can be downloaded by visiting www.crawfordunitedway.org or by requesting a form via email to crawforduw@gmail.com. Include “Fun Run” in the email subject line. Pre-registration is encouraged. The fee includes lunch, dinner and a commemorative T-shirt, while supplies last. There will be prize drawings for participants during dinner.

Pond hockey tourney Feb. 13-16

ST. IGNACE — January’s cold temperatures are welcome here as the city prepares to host the UP Adult Pond Hockey championship Feb. 13-16 on Lake Huron — billed as the biggest sheet of ice in the Midwest.

Festivities begin with a meet-and-greet with Detroit Red Wings alumni on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Mackinac Grille restaurant. On Friday, the Wings alumni hit the ice at 7 p.m. for an exhibition game against some of the pond hockey competitors at the Little Bear East Arena.

More than 200 teams are expected to compete in this year’s championship with play starting at noon on Friday. Match-ups are organized by age (21 and up) and gender.
