Prep Basketball Roundup: Suttons Bay tops Leland

LELAND — Suttons Bay topped Leland 59-49 in Northwest Conference action to set up a first-place battle Saturday night with Frankfort.

The Norse and Panthers both enter the make-up game with unblemished NWC records.

Suttons Bay (4-1, 3-0 NWC) remained perfect in the league behind Aaron Orban’s 20 points and 20 rebounds Thursday. Logan Mikesell had 12 points.

Austin Fellows led Leland (3-5, 1-3 NWC) with 14 points, while Cam Stowe added 10 and Carson Poirier nine.

Kingsley 67

Buckley 30

Senior Tyler Newell grabbed the rebounds and dished out assists, and four underclassmen did most of the scoring as Kingsley notched a 67-30 Northwest Conference victory over Mesick.

Newell finished with six points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. Kingsley (3-4, 1-3 NWC) sophomores Hunter Scott, Tyler Case and Stacy Almquist scored 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively, while freshman Nathan Schaar scored 11.

Buckley was led by Michael Rosek and Bryce Guernsey with eight points each.

The Stags host McBain next Tuesday.

Benzie Central 63

Mesick 54

Trevor Witkop had 21 points and Ismael Halaweh added 19 as Benzie Central picked up a 63-54 Northwest Conference victory over Mesick.

Zane Brooks gave the Huskies (3-4, 3-1 Northwest) a third double figure scorer with 10.

Leading Mesick were Jordan Calhoun with 20 and Billy Bardocz with 15.

Benzie, which led 31-26 at the half, hosts Glen Lake on Wednesday.

Bellaire 61

Gaylord St. Mary 44

James Schrader busted loose for 29 points to lead Bellaire to a 61-44 Ski Valley Conference victory over Gaylord St. Mary.

Schrader hit 10 of 11 free throws among his 29 points.

Denny Hall added 20 points, four assists and seven rebounds, knocking down all eight of his shots from the charity stripe.

The Eagles (7-0, 4-0 SVC) host Pellston on Tuesday.

Charles Strehl had 20 points for the Snowbirds.

TC Christian 71

Northport 22

Four players scored in double figures as Traverse City Christian topped Northport 71-22 in Cherryland Conference play.

Kris Crosby had 13 points, Kevin Mannes and Brad Benson 11 each and David Bump had 10. The Sabres (4-3) have won four straight.
