Spruce Run set to open today

ACME — One of the three golf courses at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is slated to open this Sunday.

The Spruce Run course is schedule to be open, weather permitting. The Wolverine and The Bear aim to be ready for play by April 25.

TC fishing team 5th at world champs

QUEPOS, Costa Rica — Traverse City-based Wet Dream Fishing Team placed fifth out of 68 teams in the Offshore World Championship fishing tournament at the Pez Vela Marina.

The Traverse City based team consisted of Sam Worden, Kevin Clark and Sherry White, and friends Michelle Di Matta and Mike Slocum from Philadelphia, PA.

In 19th place after day one with four sailfish, they caught six more and climbed into eighth place overall on day two. On day three, the team was off to a solid start with five sailfish, when Clark caught a 200-pound blue marlin, and Worden caught a 36-pound wahoo. They held onto 1st place until the team from Papua New Guinea caught a dozen sails that afternoon, and they ended the day in second place overall.

On the final day, they dropped to 12th place with half an hour left to fish. With just five minutes left, they landed three sailfish with five minutes, putting them in fifth place overall. Worden ended up the fourth angler overall with 10 of the team’s 20 fish.

Auxiliary offers 2 boating classes

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering separate GPS and Navigation Classes.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is a three-hour course on May 2 from 6-9 p.m. in Traverse City at West Marine on M-37. This is an Introduction to the Marine GPS system and how it works. Topics include Navigation for Mariners and using GPS to Navigate on the water. GPS units are available to work with. Cost is $10 to cover cost of textbook and certificate. Register by calling Dianne Walker at 941-8076 by April 29.
