Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids held Traverse City Central to six points in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to pull away to a 59-45 season-opening basketball win.
Central trailed by eight at half, then took the lead in the third quarter before falling behind 41-39 entering the fourth quarter. Big Rapids hit 9-of-11 free throws in the decisive 18-6 fourth quarter.
Quinn Tyson scored a game-high 23 for Big Rapids. Nate Schlusler paced the Trojans with 19. Jackson Schrameyer added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Central won the JV game 53-48 as James Brumfield scored 18 and Magnus Carlson 11.
The freshmen won 46-16 behind 14 from Nik Norton.
The Trojans host Alpena on Friday.
Gaylord pulled ahead for good in the third period, then held off Charlevoix in the fourth quarter, posting a 56-45 victory over the Rayders.
The teams were tied 28-28 at the half, and after the two teams exchanged leads early in the third, Gaylord eventually pulled in front. Charlevoix got as close as five points in the final period, but couldn’t draw closer.
Leading Gaylord were Collin Watters with 14 points, Marcus O’Rourke with 11 and Zachary Pasternak with 10.
For Charlevoix (0-2), Justin Pearl had 10 points and Shane Sutherland nine.
The Rayders face Leland at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday in Kingsley for the Lake Michigan Conference/Northwest Conference Challenge.
Kalkaska surged out to the early lead, then held off Mesick in the final period of a 60-54 season-opening victory.
The Blazers were ahead in each period, but the Bulldogs pulled within four points with two minutes remaining. The Blazers spread the floor and got a layup and were never threatened from there.
Will Noble led Kalkaska with 29 points, eight boards and four steals. Austin Cooper added 12 points and nine rebounds. Aaron Zimmerman chipped in with eight points.
Three players accounted for all of Mesick’s offense, with Jordan Calhoun scoring 21, Clay Wagatha 20 and Brad Harris 13.
Kalkaska is at Harbor Springs on Tuesday.
East Jordan 85
East Jordan outscored Mancelona 15-1 in overtime to post an 85-71 non-league triumph.
Noah Bacchus led the Red Devils with 31 points. Jordan Weber added 14, Donny Cutler 12 and Colin Petrie 10.
Brandon Dingman’s 36 points, seven rebounds and four steals paced Mancelona, which is at Lake City on Thursday. Griffin Borst contributed 19 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Boyne City 73
Bradley Fouchia scored 19 points as Boyne City opened with a 73-55 non-league win over Onaway.
Joe O’Bradovich netted 20 points for Onaway, which hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston next Tuesday.
After going into the half tied 19-19, Grayling owned the second half and cruised to a 52-34 win over Roscommon.
The Vikings picked up their defense in the second half and outscored the Bucks 33-15 to open the season with a victory.
Justin Junttila led Grayling with 20 points, Tyler McClanahan added 13 and Matt Burrell chipped in 10. Brett Jobin led Roscommon with 14 points.
The Vikings face Kingsley on Saturday at 12:45 for the Lake Michigan Conference/Northwest Conference Challenge.
Central Lake 42
Nate Veldboom’s rebound and putback at the buzzer was the difference as Ellsworth slipped past Central Lake 43-42 in the season opener for both teams.
The game was a back-and-forth contest between the two rivals, with Ellsworth leading 8-7 after the first period, Central Lake holding a 21-17 lead at the half and a tie game, 29-29, entering the final period.
Veldboom led the Lancers with 15 points and Diamond McPherson added eight. Central Lake’s Will Brockman led all scorers with 20 points, while Isaac Mortensen had 10.
Ellsworth faces Bellaire on Thursday.
Gaylord St. Mary 39
Harbor Light 27
Gaylord St. Mary outscored Harbor Light 18-5 in the second quarter and posted a comfortable 39-27 win in its season opener.
The Snowbirds (1-0) held a slim 7-5 lead after one period, but dominated the second period to take a 25-10 lead into the half.
Charles Strehl led the Snowbirds with 14 points and Cameron Juneak added 12. For Harbor Light, Lucas Matthews had 14 points.
St. Mary hosts Central Lake on Tuesday.

Forest Area 47
Lake City turned a 19-3 second quarter advantage into a 59-47 non-league triumph over Forest Area.
Drew Marion netted 22 points and Kevin Kunkle 16 for the Trojans. Austin Vance tossed in 14 points and Justin Burke 11 for the Warriors. Both had nine rebounds.
Forest Area faces Traverse City Christian on Friday.
