Girls Basketball Roundup: Cadillac slides by TC Central

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central played with more energy in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans fell to Cadillac 45-41 in a Big North Conference opener Tuesday.

Central (0-3) trailed in the first half, but got back into the game with a more spirited showing and the help of a 1-2-2 press, tying the contest in the fourth period.

“We must drink energy water at halftime because we’re a totally different team when we come out,” said Central coach Heather Simpson.

Cadillac had a big edge in free throws, connecting on 18 of 36 tries.

Leading the Vikings were Abby Fuller and Hannah Baker, each with 13 points. For Central, Mary Barbera had nine points and Eliza McCall added eight. Sierra Fraser had a team-leading 11 rebounds.

The Trojans won the JV game 42-35 as Abby Green scored 15 points and Haven Hill 11.

Central travels to Alpena on Friday.

St. Francis got off to a good start and cruised to a 56-25 victory over Benzie Central.

St. Francis won the JV game 43-42. Gigi Ward netted 16 points and Colleen LaBonte 15 for the 2-2 Gladiators. Leah Stapleton and Ashley Nye scored 11 apiece for Benzie.

St. Francis hosts Leland on Monday.

Elk Rapids 32

Glen Lake 30

A blocked shot with two seconds left denied Glen Lake a chance to tie the game as Elk Rapids escaped with a 32-30 girls basketball victory.

Bridget Hintz came up with the key block on the Lakers final possession to give the Elks their first win of the year.

Rachel Hintz led Elk Rapids (1-2) with 12 points, while Glen Lake’s Jessica Lee scored 10 points to top her team’s offense.
