CADILLAC — Mitchell Ward and Cam Givens had four points each as Traverse City Central went on the road for a 5-0 shutout victory over Big North Conference foe Cadillac on Wednesday.

Bill Vermetten made 13 saves for the team's first shutout of the season.

Givens scored the game's first and last goals, both of which were set up by Mitchell Ward and Nico Saco.

Ward and Saco ended up with three points each.

Cooper Macdonell put Central up 2-0 off Givens and Ward assists to go into the first intermission up two.

Ward and Jon Russell made it 4-0 in the second period, with Ward striking off assists by Saco and Givens and Russell cashing in assists from Brady Brantley and Kyle Ludwig.

Givens scored the third period's only goal off Ward and Saco helpers.

P.J. Nemesh stopped 44 shots for the Vikings.

Central (4-0, 2-0 BNC) is back on the ice Friday at the Rick Miller Memorial Tournament in Hancock this weekend. The Trojans face the hosts Friday night and Houghton on Saturday afternoon. TC West is also in the event, facing Houghton on Friday and Hancock on Saturday.


Kingsley      70 Kalkaska      43

Tyler Newell and Travis DeBello scored 15 points apiece as Kingsley opened its season with a 70-43 non-conference basketball win over Kalkaska.

The Stags led 39-19 at half.

Marlin Reese and Caleb Gelinas paced Kalkaska (1-1) with 14 points.

Kingsley and Kalkaska compete in the Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge this weekend in Kalkaska. The Stags face Charlevoix on Friday.

Suttons Bay      41 Elk Rapids      38

Aaron Orban's double-double powered Suttons Bay to a 41-38 non-conference win over Elk Rapids.

Orban finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds — six off the offensive glass.

Austin McMullen netted 15 points and Cole Walker 10 for the Elks, who start two sophomores and a freshman. Elk Rapids turned the ball over 23 times and hit just 3 of 13 free throws, 1 of 10 in the first half.

"That didn't help," Elks coach Luke Johnson said.

Elk Rapids faces Leland at 4:30 Friday in the Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge at Kalkaska. Suttons Bay takes on St. Francis at 5:15 Saturday.


Warriors win pair of dual matches

Forest Area beat Lake City 45-12 and Elk Rapids 36-28 in a double-dual.

Double winners for the Warriors included Landon Elliott, Matt Elliott, Chris Schelske, Dion Burke, Brandon Anes and Reese Velfing. Tyler Leffingwell and Nick Anes were 1-1.

Forest Area is at Manton on Saturday.
