TRAVERSE CITY — Cam Givens scored his first varsity hat-trick Friday night as Traverse City Central beat Lake Orion 6-3 in the opening game of the Traverse City West Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament.
The host Titans were not as fortunate in the nightcap, dropping a 5-0 decision to Warren De La Salle.
Central and De La Salle will play for the title today at Centre ICE following the consolation game at 2 o'clock.
"This is a younger team than they've had in the past, but they sure don't look any less talented," Trojan coach Chris Givens said of De La Salle. "They have some good players, good shooters. We'll have our hands full."
The Trojans led 2-0 and 4-2 after the first two periods in turning back Lake Orion.
Derek Shrank and Cam Givens staked the Trojans to the early first period lead.
"First game, everyone had some jitters," Cam Givens said. "It was nice to go out and have a good first period and get some confidence."
Givens goal came with the Trojans shorthanded.
He added a power play tally in the second period. This after his father mentioned this week that he should look to shoot more on the power play.
"I guess in practice I wasn't shooting enough, I was passing too much," the junior said. "He (Chris Givens) said when you have a lane, pick your head up and let it go. The first time I did it I scored."
Sophomore Cooper Marshall netted his first varsity goal later in the period for Central.
The Trojans closed it with goals by Cooper Macdonell and Givens in the third period.
Nico Saco finished with three assists for the Trojans.
