Northern Lights team finishes 2nd
KALAMAZOO — The Traverse City Figure Skating Club’s Northern Lights Synchronized skating team placed second Saturday in a field of more than 35 teams at the Midwestern Sectionals competition at The Annex in Kalamazoo.
“In the 12 years I’ve worked with this team, this is the best finish we’ve ever had,” said Northern Lights coach Heidi Masse. “We’ve never scored a medal at Sectionals until today. The girls skated a clean program and just nailed it.”
The Midwestern Sectionals feature teams from 21 states.
The Northern Lights team qualified for Saturday’s final by finishing second in their nine-team qualifying round on Friday morning, one of three qualifying rounds. The top four teams from each round advanced to the finals.
The Northern Lights team consists of Karri Benson, Veronica Compton, Kayla Harley, Ellen Tilford, Emily Dickerson, Erika Edmondson, Audrey Salata, Emma Welch, Sara Skarshaug, Lauren Leslie, Sarah Gentry, Ella Brodeur, Samantha Schermerhorn and Grace Linenger.
The Midwestern Sectionals was the third competition of the season for Northern Lights, which won gold at the Dr. Richard Porter Synchronized Skating Classic in December. The team will compete at the Swan Synchronized Skating Classic in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Feb. 9-10.
Junior Vasa races set for Feb. 9
TRAVERSE CITY — The Junior VASA returns to Traverse City on Saturday Feb. 9, as part of the North American Vasa Festival of Races at Timber Ridge Resort.
The Junior Vasa is for skiers ages 3-15 with events ranging from 1-3K in length.
The registration fee is $5. Registration is available online at www.vasa.org. Race day registration is also available at the main lodge at Timber Ridge starting at 10 a.m. Parents should arrive with their kids “ski-ready” and should allow time to complete the registration and waiver form and pick up the skier race bib.
Vasa officials are inviting “grown-up” skiers and ski fans to cheer the kids on with cowbells, a unique tradition in Nordic and downhill skiing.
Races begin at 12:30 p.m. with a 1K classic with two waves for children ages 5-under and 6-7, followed by a 12:40 p.m. start for a 3K freestyle with three waves for ages 8-9, 10-11, and 12-15. That will be followed by a 12:50 p.m. start for a 3K classic with waves for ages, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-15.
All Junior skiers will receive a custom Vasa medal of accomplishment at the finish line. The event is not timed, but a large clock will be running for those interested in their time.
