CENTER CITY, Minn. — Traverse City’s Lili Lockwood finished second in a regional water ski championship here over the weekend.
The Central junior, 16, skied three buoys at 32 off. There were 18 girls in her slalom class. The winner skied 3¼ buoys at 32 off.
“Basically, she (the winner) crossed a wake and I didn’t,” Lockwood said. “It was close.”
Nonetheless, Lockwood was pleased with her third podium finish in three years.
“I wanted to be happy with my performance and I was,” she said. “One of these days I’m going to win it.”
Lockwood was third last year and second two years ago.
Based on her performance and ranking, Lockwood was elected to the 2014 Midwest Junior Elite Team. The team is selected annually and consists of eight girls and eight boys from the 13-state Midwest region.
Lockwood is now taking part in a Win Alpine downhill training camp at Mount Hood, Ore.
“It’s warm, but the snow is really solid,” she said. “It’s really good training.”
A 25-year-old snowboarder died on Mount Hood on Saturday when an ice tunnel collapsed and buried him.
“They’re (officials) telling us not go into the crevasses,” Lockwood said.
