A good off-season for Wings' GM Holland

TRAVERSE CITY — Re-signing Pavel Datsyuk to an extension?

Check.

Adding some firepower to the offense in free agency?

Check.

It’s been a good off-season thus far for Red Wings GM Ken Holland.

The free agent haul landed winger Daniel Alfredsson and center Stephen Weiss.

“Obviously, we’re excited,” he said. “I thought last year we were challenged offensively. It was hard to score goals in the West (Division) for whatever reasons. There were lots of low-scoring games, Chicago scored lots of goals, Anaheim scored lots of goals. We were sort of in a pack with a bunch of other teams (after that).

“We wanted to get more scoring. Stephen Weiss, five of the last seven years, has scored 48 points or more. He’s 30 years of age. He’s a play-making center. Daniel Alfredsson has been the face of the Ottawa franchise. Even though he’s 40 years of age, he’s real competitive. He’s got a tremendous one-timer. We think our power play is going to be better just having Alfie standing on the top of the circle and having the threat of a shot.

“When you look at (Johan) Franzen, (Henrik) Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Weiss and Alfredsson, we have the makings of two lines that can score.”

The Red Wings have lost center Valtteri Filppula to Tampa Bay and don’t appear to be in the running to re-sign forward Damien Brunner.

“I made him an offer,” Holland said of Brunner, “and he didn’t like it.”
