TC’s Halverson on draft watch list

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City native Brandon Halverson was listed among the top American prospects when a hockey web site unveiled its list for the 2014 NHL Draft.

The site westerncollegehockeyblog.com put 16 players in its “A” grouping, with Halverson among 20 in the “B” class.

There is only one goalie in each of the A, B and C groupings. “B” players are listed as “likely to be selected.”

Turkey hunting applications

LANSING — Applications for fall turkey hunting licenses are on sale in Michigan.

The state Department of Natural Resources says the sale will continue through Aug. 1.

A total of 51,850 licenses are available. They include 5,150 general licenses that may be used on public or private land, and 46,700 licenses for private land only.

The hunting season runs from Sept. 15 through Nov. 14. Areas that are open for turkey hunting include most of the southern Lower Peninsula, Beaver Island, five counties in the northern Lower Peninsula and the entire Upper Peninsula.

Hunters may apply for a license at any authorized license agent, at DNR Operations Service Centers or online at michigan.gov/huntdrawings.

The application fee is $4. Drawing results will be posted online beginning Aug. 15.

Downstate district ends athletic fees

WARREN — A suburban Detroit school district is dropping pay-to-play fees for participating in sports or band.

The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports (http://bit.ly/11bYDlo) the Warren Consolidated Schools Board of Education recently voted to cancel the student activity fee, which was $100 for high school students and $75 at the middle school level.

The aim is to allow more participation in sports and band. School officials say they’re considering new advertising efforts to make up the revenue lost from the fees.

Mike Schulte, director of student activities, athletics and facility usage, said in a statement that participation was on the decline because of pay-to-play.
