BEAR LAKE — Traverse City Christian defeated Suttons Bay 11-25, 25-23, 15-7 Thursday to win the Bear Lake Volleyball Invitational.

The Sabres went 5-0 on the day. In pool play, they downed Brethren (25-18, 25-9), Suttons Bay (26-24, 25-19) and Mason County Central (25-8, 25-15). Christian topped Mesick in the semifinals (25-14, 25-19).

Leading the Sabres: Abryanna Cannon (32 kills, three blocks, six aces), Maddie White (25 kills, 11 aces), Rylee Price (19 kills, three blocks, five aces) and Mikayla Brett (13 kills, seven blocks, 11 aces).

West tops TCSF in Leland Invitational final

Traverse City West avenged an earlier loss to TC St. Francis in the championship match of the Leland Invitational to bring home the tournament trophy.

West defeated St. Francis 25-27, 25-20, 17-15 in a tight championship match. Earlier in pool play the Gladiators won 25-3, 24-26, 15-12. The Titans got to the finals by beating Leland in the semifinals, 25-12, 25-18, and Benzie Central in the quarterfinals, 25-7, 25-8.

In other pool play games the Titans knocked off Frankfort, 25-5, 25-7, and Northport, 25-8, 25-10.

Leaders for West were Ally Peters with 13 aces, 116 assists and 19 digs; Anna O'Hara with 11 aces, eight digs and 49 kills; Katie Placek with 22 aces, 62 kills and 53 digs; and Mikenna Ray with 29 digs.

St. Francis was 4-0 in pool play, sweeping Northport (25-11, 25-7), Frankfort (25-17, 25-12) and Glen Lake (25-11, 25-19) and posting a 3-25, 26-24, 15-12 win over West. The Gladiators beat Charlevoix 25-16, 25-17 in the semifinals before falling to West in another close three-setter in the title match.

The Glads (10-3) were led by Laura Kirchofer (12 digs, 84 assists, 24 aces), Madeline Rysztak (37 kills, 23 digs, 12 aces), Sophie Spencer (28 kills, 16 digs, 12 aces), Megan Knudsen (10 kills, 19 aces), Haley Bussell (26 digs, six aces), Olivia Hardy (six aces, five blocks), Julianna Phillips (10 kills) and Nicole Erhardt (22 digs).

Leland posted a 3-0 record in pool play, defeating Benzie Central 25-15, 25-13, Glen Lake 25-14, 25-11 and Charlevoix 25-15, 25-14 before topping Northport 25-6 and 25-14 in the quarterfinals and falling to West 12-25, 18-25 in the semis.

The tourney reversed a slow start to the season for the Comets (5-7-3), who were 1-6-3 coming in.
