ALLEN PARK — Former Traverse City West offensive lineman Darren Keyton, an undrafted rookie free agent, signed with the Detroit Lions on Monday.
The Lions released center Skyler Allen to make room for Keyton on the 90-man roster.
The team didn’t release terms of Keyton’s contract Monday, although it’s been reported as a three-year deal.
Keyton was one of 21 players invited to the team’s rookie camp last weekend on a tryout contract — and the only one of those 21 the Lions decided to add to the active roster.
Keyton (6-3, 305) played at Central Michigan University, where he started all 13 games as right guard in 2012. He’s also played left guard and center at CMU, and that flexibility could help his chances of making Detroit’s final 53-man roster or eight-man practice squad.
The Lions return one starter back at guard in Rob Sims. They drafted massive Kentucky guard Larry Warford in the third round. Dominic Raiola returns at center, but he agreed to a restructured contract at a lower salary near the veteran minimum. The team also acquired former starter Bill Nagy from the Dallas Cowboys last season. The only other interior linemen on the team’s roster are second-year pro Rodney Austin, eight-year veteran Dylan Gandy and fourth-year player Derek Hardman, who was recently claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay.
Allen was an undrafted free agent out of Ohio University signed by the team right after this year’s draft.
