Dow topples Trojans, 8-0

TRAVERSE CITY — Hannah Piper scored three goals as Midland Dow defeated Traverse City Central 8-0 in a non-league soccer match Saturday.

The game was halted with 24:30 left in the second half because of the mercy rule.

Maya Piper added two goals and two assists for Dow (6-1) while Rachel Marble netted two goals and Amanda Pokreifka one.

Central (4-5) travels to Petoskey on Tuesday.

Dow won the JV match 5-2 Lauren Kok and Kayla Lobodzinski each had two goals and an assist for the Chargers (3-0). Jennifer Rose tallied both goals for Central (1-4). Sierra Fraser and Cara Ferguson drew the assists.

Kiel, Westdorp capture 10K

KALKASKA — Kyle Kiel, fresh off the Boston Marathon, won the men’s Wood Memorial 10K Saturday as part of the National Trout Festival in Kalkaska.

Kiel finished in 35:44.78. He was followed by Trevor Darnell at 36:59.54 and Glenn Goodman at 40:07.56.

Kersten Westdorp won the women’s race in 44:32.77. Katie Smith was second in 47:01.53 and Fawn Southwell third in 49:45.05.

Sixteen-year-old Gabe Hawley captured the 5K in 17:25.28. He was followed by Rick Hawley in 19:24.53 and Nicholas Matelski in 19:36.28.

Erica Westbrook took the women’s 5K in 20:39.53. Jamie Lemay placed second in 22:37.54 and Isabelle Nonth third in 23:24.05.

Mills joins Special Olympics Michigan

MT. PLEASANT — Aaron Mills, former sports anchor at 9&10 News, has been hired as the public relations and social media coordinator for Special Olympics Michigan.

Mills started his new job April 15. He will oversee all aspects of public relation, including the website, electronic newsletter, social media, media relations and video production.

Ex-MLB players to help launch season

CHARLEVOIX — Twelve former Major League Baseball alumni will be here next weekend to help Charlevoix Little League kick off its the season.

Bruce Look, Dennis Rasmussen, Steve Avery, Doug Mirabelli, Ray Herbert, Dick Colpaert, Dan Rohn, Roger Mason, John Luplow, Matt Mieske, Dave Bergman, and Rob Ellis will get the weekend started by hosting a free baseball/softball clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Charlevoix Little League Field near the airport. Immediately following, clinic participants will be served lunch and there will be an autograph session with the former players. After lunch, Charlevoix Little League will host its Opening Day ceremonies.
