Bums fall out of first

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped out of first place in the East Division with a 4-3 road setback Friday to the Schaumburg Boomers.

Lake Erie won its ninth straight game — 5-1 over the Frontier Greys — to move into sole possession of first. The last time Traverse City wasn’t in first place was July 6.

The Bums (47-32) are 3.5 games ahead of Southern Illinois and four in front of Florence for a wild card playoff spot.

All-Star first baseman Chase Burch didn’t play for the second straight game due to an unspecified injury.

The West Division-leading Boomers (47-32) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take their first lead.

Traverse City had surged into an early advantage on a Matt Howard RBI single and a Carlo Testa two-run double.

Gerard Hall scored in the fifth on a double and two Mike Devine wild pitches, and Bubba Dotson cracked a solo home run off Chris Squires (1-2) in the sixth.

Matt Kuna gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings, but relievers James Bierlein, Adam Tollefson and Dexter Price combined for four innings of one-hit work.

Devine surrendered only one run in five innings, but Squires was tagged with three in 1.1 frames.

Nick Capito came on for 1.2 hitless innings.

Testa was 3 for 4, and his four-game hitting streak has seen his average jump from .277 to .294.

Howard had two hits, while Ryan Still walked twice. Marcus Nidiffer and Jonathan Banks each had a hit and a walk, but Banks was thrown out at home in the ninth.

Today’s 7 p.m. EST matchup features undefeated Scott Dunn (14-0, 2.15) against Schaumburg’s Seth Webster (3-1, 2.28).
