— Cadillac tops Grayling for Class B regional

GRAYLING — Cadillac advanced the Class B quarterfinals with a 60-41 regional championship win over Grayling.

Cadillac led 28-17 at half.

Matt Adams scored 16 points and Jalen Brooks 15 for the Vikings.

Justice Junitilla had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Grayling, which finished 19-6.

 

Leapin’ Leprechaun 5K set for Saturday

TRAVERSE CITY — The Leapin’ Leprechaun 5K will start at 9 a.m. Saturday morning in the warehouse district.

More than 1,000 runners are expected. Runners are encouraged to wear green.

The event is put on by the National Cherry Festival and Fifth Third Bank.

Each racer will receive a commemorative T-shirt with medals for the top finishers and best Irish costume.

Online registration closes at 5 p.m. tonight.

 

Central recruiting meet workers

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Central Track and Field program is recruiting track and field enthusiasts to become members of the “Trojan Track and Field Home Team,” a crew of 20 experienced volunteers who will work at home track and field meets this spring.

To be considered, applicants must have knowledge about track and field. Volunteers will be needed in high jump, shot put, discus, pole vault, long jump, timing, recording and meet clerk.

Candidates should plan on committing about three hours on meet days. There will be eight meets in all, starting April 4. Most meets start at 4 p.m.

The volunteers will be managed by the high school coaching staff’s meet manager. Student volunteers will assist all crew members with their duties.

Individuals interested can contact Athletic Director Cody Inglis at inglisco@tcaps.net to receive an application. The deadline is March 22. An introductory meeting for crew members will be held April 2 at the high school track.

 

Former North Stars earn CCHA honors

BIG RAPIDS — Former Traverse City North Stars players Kyle Bonis and C.J. Motte have been selected as honorable mentions on the all-Central Collegiate Hockey Association team.

Bonis leads Ferris State with 17 goals and is second among the squad’s scoring leaders with 24 points, one behind Garrett Thompson’s team-leading total. He leads the conference and is eighth in the nation to date with seven power-play goals, while ranking second among the league leaders and 19th in the country with 14 total goals.

Motte has been the Bulldogs’ goalie of record in 32 of 34 games this year. He’s 12th in the country with three shutouts and ranks 17th nationally in save percentage (.927), along with 19th in goals against average (2.17) heading into this week’s action. In the CCHA, Motte is third in save percentage and fifth in goals against average.

Thompson, a Traverse City native, also received votes for the all-CCHA team.

Ex-North Star forward Kory Kaunisto, a forward for Northern Michigan, is one of the CCHA’s 11 nominees the for scholar-athlete of the year.

 

Parallel 45 boys’ 16U/17U tryouts set

BOYNE CITY — Tryouts for Parallel 45’s 16-under (current sophomores) and 17-under (juniors) boys’ AAU basketball teams will be held from 7-9 pm Wednesday, March 20 at Boyne City High School.

The teams will play a highly competitive Midwest tournament schedule in April and May. There is a $10 registration fee.
