Osorio to play in All-Star game

LELAND — Leland’s Maggie Osorio will compete in the All-State senior All-Star Volleyball Classic on Aug. 2 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

The event showcases the top senior players from across the state. Two semifinal matches will be played at 5:30 p.m., followed by the consolation and championship matches at 7:30.

Hounds add Bussing to defense

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Hounds added to their defensive corps for the upcoming season with the addition of 16-year-old Muskegon native Cory Bussing.

The 6-2, 200-pound Bussing played last year in the Midwest Junior Hockey League for the Holland River Bandits, tallying 12 goals and 27 points in 44 games good for a top-10 finish among league defensemen. He also added 103 penalty minutes.

Roller derby to honor veterans

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City’s two roller derby teams will honor veterans at a doubleheader on Saturday, July 20.

The first 50 veterans and current service members can get a free ticket by registering on vettix.org/event/8830. The Elks Club will be providing free U.S. flags and Traverse City Roller Derby will honor veterans with a special Color Guard presentation.

The Cherry Bombs will hit the track to battle Capital Corruption while the Toxic Cherries will take on the Lansing Derby Vixens at 6 p.m. at Howe Arena.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, Children 10-under are free. Tickets are available at Ben Franklin, Lifer Skate Shop, InsideOut Gallery, Oryana and brownpapertickets.com.

Candele captures jumper class

TRAVERSE CITY — Canadian Yann Candele, aboard Carolla Z in the highlight jumper class, won the $30,000 Danny & Ron’s Rescue Grand Prix of Traverse City at the Horse Shows By the Bay on Sunday.

A field of 30 starters tackled the 13-fence/16-effort course.

Candele held off Florida’s Aaron Vale, the final rider. Vale zipped around the shortened course with Zippo II, stopping the clock just .08 seconds off the pace for second. On Thursday, Vale jumped to top honors in the featured $10,000 Positive Step Farm Open Jumper Welcome Prix aboard Spirit Of Alena.
