Beach Bums to field six in All-Star Game

TRAVERSE CITY — Three more All-Stars for the Traverse City Beach Bums.

Well, six, actually.

After the Bums won Wednesday night, they sat atop the East Division, which gave the manager’s job to Gregg Langbehn for the second straight season.

In turn, he choose first baseman Chase Burch, reliever Nick Capito and starting pitcher Jake Sabol to be added to the East Division squad for the 2013 Frontier League All-Star Game next Wednesday.

"These are guys that are deserving to go," Langbehn said. "Every year, somebody's going to be left out. There's still guys that deserve to go that are left off."

Joining Langbehn in the dugout will be Traverse City coaches Matt Pulley and Dan Rohn.

Burch is hitting .305 with nine homers and is tied for the Frontier League lead with 42 RBI. He is also among the top 10 in the league in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging, walks, sacrifice flies and hits. It’s the third FL All-Star selection for Burch, joining his appearances in 2010 and 2012.

Capito entered Thursday’s game with a 2-0 record, six saves and a 0.83 ERA. In 32.2 innings he has struck out 37 batters against just eight walks, two of which were intentional. Opponents are hitting .117 against Capito who will be making his second consecutive All-Star game appearance.

Sabol is 6-4 on the season with a 2.44 ERA and is tied for the league lead in both complete games with three and shutouts with two. Opposition hitters are batting .222 against the right-hander who has walked just 12 batters in 66.1 innings.

They join shortstop Taylor Wrenn, catcher Marcus Nidiffer and Scott Dunn, who was also named the game’s starting pitcher.

The East team has 29 players, so Langbehn said his biggest challenge will be to get them all in the game. Dunn will pitch one inning, and no hurler will go more than a full frame.
