Roundup: XC teams make splash at Portage

PORTAGE — Running with some of the best teams in the state on Saturday, TC Central and Benzie Central each made a splash at the Portage Invitational.

In the Division 1 race, the Trojan girls finished with 145 points. Saline won with 41 while Rockford was second with 141.

TC Central's top five all medaled in the race. Ashley Ko was 20th (18:53), Jordan Mattarella was 21st (18:57), Graceanne Tarsa was 24th (19:01), Katie Moses was 39th (19:18) and Joy Reist was 41st (19:21).

TC West was 19th. Jessica Gockley took 46th (19:27), Kayla Norris was 86th (20:08), Emily O'Leary was 127th (20:50), Quinn Hall took 128th (20:51) and Corinne Schrotenboer was 133rd (21:01).

In the boys race, Hilliard Davidson — the No. 2 team in Ohio — won with 106 points. Saline was second (129) and Rockford was third (160). TC Central was sixth (246).

Trojans freshman Anthony Berry finished 31st in 16:15. He was the fastest freshman at the meet and broke the TCC school record for a freshman time.

Other counters were Kyle Dotterrer in 33rd (16:17), Cam McAuliffe was 36th (16:19), Nicholas Tarsa was 70th (16:47) and Cam Marshall was 76th (16:50).

TC West finished 17th. Alec Ondrajka was 55th (16:35), Jimmy Seekamp was 86th (16:58), Kieran Hall was 87th (16:58), Nick Hirschenberger was 92nd (17:00) and Sean Hall was 134th (17:23).

In Division 3, Benzie Central's girls finished eight points behind top-ranked Calvin Christian for the second week in a row.

The Huskies placed Alyssa Bennett sixth (18:51), Bryce Cutler was eighth (19:03), Makayla Huddleston was 30th (19:54), Rachael Peabody was 41st (20:18) and Sarah Jones was 50th (20:47).

Benzie Central's boys also had a good showing by placing sixth.

"We're right there, just over the next month we need to sharpen some things up," Huskies coach Asa Kelly said.

The team's counters were separated by 19 seconds. Kyle Bailey was 29th (17:00), Justin Prange was 33rd (17:04), Ismael Halaweh was 37th (17:11), Jared Bluhm was 39th (17:12) and Andrew Hayden was 48th (17:19).

TC Central's girls placed five runners in the top 10 for the JV meet. Kalina Pfannenstiel was second (19:48), Lauren Marsh took fourth (19:53), Courtney Stewart was seventh (20:06), Ellie Taylor was eighth (20:12) and Hayley Padden was ninth (20:19).


Kingsley tops Leland at Suttons Bay

Kingsley swept Leland earlier in the week when they met in Northwest Conference play.

While the outcome was the same when they met Saturday in the finals of the Suttons Bay Invitational, the Comets had a better showing in a 21-18, 18-21, 15-9 defeat.

The Comets (32-9-4) had wins in pool play over Glen Lake (21-8, 21-18), TC Christian (21-8, 21-10), Hancock (21-16, 21-13) and Houghton (21-9, 21-18) with a 21-19, 22-20 semifinal win over Charlevoix. They split with Charlevoix (24-22, 14-21) and Benzie Central (18-21, 21-19) earlier in the day.

Leland's Caitlin McKee was named team MVP in the morning and finished with 15 aces, 120 assists and 32 digs. Maggie Osorio made the all-tournament team with seven aces and 56 digs.

Other Comet stats included Andrea Hunt with 36 kills, 26 digs and 10 aces, Felicia Whittaker with 45 kills, Heather Burns with 16 kills and nine assists, Whittany Schaub with 19 aces and 30 digs, Annalise Robinson with 24 digs and Noa Yaakoby with 25 aces and 26 kills.

TC Christian (13-22-6) beat Glen Lake (21-11, 21-10), lost to Charlevoix (21-11, 21-7), Leland (21-8, 21-10), Roscommon (21-12, 21-16) and Rogers City (21-11, 22-21) with a split against Central Lake (16-21, 21-15).

Laura Murray had 19 kills and seven aces for the Sabres, Maddie white had nine kills and two blocks, Mikayla Brett had nine kills and three blocks, Aubrey Heersema had nine aces and 12 assists and Shannon Ufer had eight kills, 13 digs and 13 assists.


Traverse City fourth at Saginaw Heritage

Traverse City finished fourth at the Saginaw Heritage Relay Meet, despite being down 10 swimmers and bringing no divers.

Williamston/Lansing Christian won with 282 points while TC had 208.

Winning for TC was the 800 relay team of Olivia Verellen, Haley Hushak and Erin Cover in 8:55.39.

Traverse City was second in the 400 free relay (4:30.28) with Cover, Hushak, Taylor Vadeboncoeur and Jami Chung. Bailey MacDermaid, Sarah Cavendish, Madison Thompson and Bryn Davis took third in the 300 backstroke relay (4:02.83).


TC Central JV      47 Detroit Jesuit JV       0

Drew Girard scored five touchdowns and the Traverse City Central defense did the rest as the Trojans notched an impressive 47-0 victory over Detroit Jesuit.

Central (5-1-1) held the Cubs to less than 30 yards of total offense, and Jesuit didn't register a first down until the fourth quarter.

The defense was led by Keelin Lundwall, Tanner Schwannecke, Daniel Youker and Mitchell Villagomez.

Sean Williams ran for one touchdown and threw for another, while Matt Pupel added a rushing TD.
