Crossover Challenge starts

KINGSLEY — The Northwest Conference-Lake Michigan Conference Crossover Challenge begins today in Kingsley with three girls basketball games on the docket.

Leland faces Elk Rapids at 4:30, Frankfort and Charlevoix clash at 6 while Kingsley takes on St. Francis at 7:30.

On Saturday, Mesick and Boyne City collide at noon, Suttons Bay and Grayling at 1:45, Buckley and Harbor Springs at 3:30, Glen Lake and East Jordan at 5:15 and Benzie and Kalkaska at 7.

Hutchison at 147 in Q tournament

LA QUINTA, Ca. — Randy Hutchison has some ground to make up.

The former Traverse City Central standout is tied for 150th with a 3-over 147 after two rounds in the final PGA Tour qualifying tournament.

The top 25 golfers earn PGA Tour cards, the next 50 Web.Com cards.

Hutchison has fired rounds of 73 and 74. The leader is Meen Whee Kim with a 13-under 131.

The tournament consists of six rounds.

Elf 5K run set for Saturday

BELLAIRE — The Bellaire Elf 5K run-walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Bellaire Senior Center. The registration fee is $20 per person or $50 per family and two non-perishable food items per person. Proceeds will benefit the Bellaire Food Pantry and the Bellaire cross country team.

Marathon training class slated

TRAVERSE CITY — Running Fit is hosting an 18-week marathon and half marathon training class geared towards runners participating in the Bayshore races.

All experience levels and fitness levels are welcome. The class includes weekly workouts and long runs, a full 18-week training schedule, group and one-on-one coaching, and mini-classes on various aspects distance training. Alison Goss will be the coach. The kick off meeting will be held at 4:45 p.m. Sunday Jan. 20 at the Running Fit downtown store. The cost of the class is $150 and participants can sign up at the store or online at RunningFit.com.

Inland Seas seminar Dec. 12

SUTTONS BAY — The Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) will present a seminar focusing on the work of the Schoolship Inland Seas and the current ecological status of Grand Traverse Bay.

The seminar will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. The program will be presented by Tom Kelly, executive director of ISEA. This seminar is free and open to the public.

This year, ISEA's 77-foot schooner Inland Seas sailed the waters of Grand Traverse Bay and northern Lake Michigan, visiting 13 ports with students from across Michigan. Together with the schooner Manitou, ISEA provided shipboard science programs for 4,175 students.
