TRAVERSE CITY — Starter Rusty Shellhorn and three relievers combined Saturday to shut out the Frontier Greys 1-0 on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park.
Shellborn struck out seven over the first six innings, surrendering just one hit and three walks.
Then Ian MacDougal, Chuck Ghysels and D.J. Johnson tossed the next three frames of scoreless ball. Each allowed one hit.
The lone hit Shellhorn (1-0) surrendered was a two-out double in the second inning to Donald Blunt. Aside from that, the left-hander scattered three walks and struck out seven in his first non-relief appearance of the season. The lone threat for the Greys was with two on and none out in the fifth, but Shellhorn forced two pop-ups around a strikeout to escape the jam.
Three of the Greys’ four hits were doubles.
Traverse City’s offense provided the lone run of the game in the bottom of the second. With two outs and the bases empty, Sean Gusrang, George Barber and Jake Rhodes strung together three straight base hits, the last of which brought in Gusrang.
Devon Pearson (0-2) prevented the Beach Bums from tacking on any insurance tallies over his six innings, striking out three and walking two while working around six hits.
D.J. Johnson picked up his sixth save of the season, getting the final four outs of the contest. The Greys did load the bases with two outs in the ninth before Johnson struck out Jon Minucci to finish the game.
Scott Woodward had half of Traverse City’s six hits, with Barber adding two more. Woodward also stole his fifth base of the season, and Rob Benedict swiped his ninth.
Newcomer Alex Phillips is slated to make his Traverse City (9-11) debut on the mound in today’s 5:05 p.m. series finale.
