TRAVERSE CITY — In his first return to Wuerfel Park since being traded by the Beach Bums last winter, Scott Dunn pitched 7.2 shutout innings as Washington beat Traverse City 5-4 on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep.
Dunn (2-1) scattered seven hits, walked three and struck out six. Washington (13-5) nearly squandered Dunn’s chance to get the win as the Beach Bums rallied with four runs in the ninth inning but still came up short as Jovan Rosa was stranded at second with the tying run.
The loss spoiled a good outing by Beach Bums starter Casey Delgado, who lasted eight innings and recorded 11 strikeouts. He did give up four earned runs, though. Washington scored one run in the first, two in the second and added what proved to be the deciding runs in the sixth.
Rosa, who was part of the deal that sent Dunn to Washington, led Traverse City going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Scott Woodward was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Rob Benedict and Sean Gusrang each also went 2 for 4.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Beach Bums stormed back, first with Taylor Wrenn scoring on an error, then on Woodward’s RBI single that brought home Chris Cowell. That brought up Rosa, who doubled home Woodward and Jeff DeBlieux with two out.
Traverse City (7-11) will try to snap its five-game losing streak tonight when it hosts the Frontier Greys (3-16).
