FLORENCE, Ky. — Traverse City takes some momentum into its home opener tonight against Windy City after the Beach Bums swept previously-undefeated Florence in a twinbill on Thursday, 5-3 and 3-1.
The Beach Bums scored two runs in each of the last two innings to rally for the game one victory. In the second game Traverse City broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game.
Drew Rossi had the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of game one. He scored on a Jose Vargas single. Jake Rhoads, who scored the first run of the eighth to get the Beach Bums (3-3) within a run of the Freedom, went 2 for 2 with a home run and a double. Scott Woodward drove in a pair of runs with a single.
Nate O’Bryan, the fourth of five pitchers for Traverse City, got the win. Beach Bums pitching racked up 10 strikeouts.
Vargas drove in all three runs in the second game. Two of those came on a two-run blast that gave Traverse City the lead in the sixth. The other came on a single in the first inning. Vargas went 2 for 3 in the game. Shaun Cooper also went 2 for 3, collecting a pair of doubles.
Alex Gillingham got the win. In five innings Gillingham allowed one run on five hits and struck out three, but hurt himself with five walks.
Mike Devine will start tonight’s home opener, while Windy City will send Jake Fisher out to the mound.
