MIDLAND — Traverse City West is in, Traverse City Central is out.
The Titans placed third Wednesday in the Division 1 golf district at Currie West to qualify for next week’s regional. West finished with a 309, three shots behind Saginaw Heritage’s 306. Midland was second at 308.
“That was one of our better numbers of the year,” West coach Mike Schultz said of the 309. “That was nice to see. It was a great day overall. You had five teams within four shots (of the lead).”
Swartz Creek, ranked No. 2 in Division 1, and Midland Dow tied for fourth at 310. Bay City Western claimed the sixth and final qualifying spot at 322. Central came in seventh at 326.
“We only missed by four,” Central coach Dave McMellen said. “It was a very tight battle.”
Alex Scott led West, firing a 73 to place fourth overall. Matt Orwig came in at 76, Joey Hunter 78 and Keits Shoemaker 82.
Central’s Derek Schrank and Abe Lewis qualified for regionals as individuals. Schrank shot a 77 and Lewis an 80. Lewis won a four-man playoff to earn the last qualifying spot with a par on the first playoff hole. Danny Brott added an 81 and Chase Knoblock 88 for the Trojans.
West and Central will compete in the Big North championships Tuesday at Gaylord. The regionals are Thursday at Davison.
