Rain suspends Bums' contest

FLORENCE, Ky. — Let’s play two.

Or, a little more accurately, about one and two-thirds.

Wednesday’s Traverse City Beach Bums and Florence Freedom game was suspended in the third inning and will be completed today as part of a doubleheader starting at 5:05 p.m.

The Freedom led 1-0 in the bottom of the third.

Joe Staley gave the Freedom the 1-0 lead with a first-inning double to score Jacob Tanis. That was the only scoring before the rain and lightning moved in.

The game will be picked up today at 5:05 p.m. with a Freedom runner on first and nobody out. The game will go the full nine innings and be followed by a seven-inning contest 30 minutes after the completion of game one.

TC starter Patrick Merkling managed to strike out the side in the first and finished with five strikeouts and a walk in two-plus innings.

Merkling will be lifted for Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 0.00) when the game resumes. Florence (4-0) has not announced who will take the mound in the fourth inning.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Alex Gillingham (0-1, 2.46) will get the ball for the Beach Bums (1-3), while the Freedom will counter with Brad Allen (0-0, 9.00).
