Sports in Brief: TC Curling Club hosts Learn to Curl classes

TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse City Curling Club is hosting Learn to Curl classes over Memorial Day weekend.

Classes cost $25 per person. Each class will be two hours of on-ice curling instruction, including on-ice safety, explanation of equipment, curling vocabulary, sliding, sweeping, and rock delivery. Class size is limited to 15 people. All equipment is provided. Advance registration is required. To register, please visit the Centre Ice website ( or call 933-7465.

Class times are: Friday, May 23 from 6-8 p.m. or 8-10 p.m. and on Saturday, May 24 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

In addition, for those with curling experience (this includes on-ice attendance at the TC Curling open house in April, completion of a Learn To Curl class, or previous experience at another curling facility) two hours of open ice will be available on Saturday, May 24, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. for just $10 per person. All curling equipment will be provided.


TRAVERSE CITY — will host its annual West Bay Beach Trout Derby Fishing Tournament on East and West Grand Traverse Bays on June 7.

This annual event invites anglers from all over Michigan to fish for cash and prizes. Prizes for the top five boats include $1,000 for 1st place. Separate prizes for the largest Trout, Ladies, Kids and Off-Species fish. Tons of door prizes will also be handed out.

Registration for the Weat Bay Beach Trout Derby will take place at the West Bay Beach Resort in Traverse City from 6-7 p.m. on June 6 with the captain’s meeting starting at 7 p.m. Fishing is June 7 between 6 a.m. and noon. Weigh-in will start at noon on Saturday on the patio at the West Bay Beach Resort with awards to follow.
