TRAVERSE CITY — The Beach Bums’ roster started taking shape on Friday.
Traverse City released three pitchers — left-handers Corey Alexander and Nate King and righty Dre Watts — and traded catcher/designated hitter Zach Kometani to River City for the Rascals’ first-round pick in next year’s Frontier League draft.
Kometani was one of the Beach Bums’ offensive leaders last year, hitting .270, almost exclusively as a designated hitter while he was recovering from Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. He hit seven home runs and drove in 58 runs (second on the team), scoring 47 runs (fourth) and leading the team with 79 strikeouts.
The Beach Bums have catchers Jovan Rosa — a converted All-Star third baseman — and Jacob Rhodes and returning backup Chris Cowell on the roster.
The Frontier League requires teams to cut down to no more than 28 players by Sunday and Traverse City now has 27 in camp. The regular season roster allows a maximum of 24 players.
The Beach Bums will hold their Blue/Gold intrasquad scrimmage today at 1 p.m. at Wuerfel Park.
Gates for the event, which is free to the public, will open at 12 p.m. on May 10 and the Wuerfel Park concession stands and gift shop will be open throughout the game. The scrimmage is expected to last between seven and 11 innings.
